So I just received a new LCR and upon inspection I'm not so sure its new. I assume Ruger after doing factory fires would thoroughly clean the revolver so almost no sign of firing would be visible. But there seems to be powder residue on the cylinder face, powder rings in the cylinder tube, and evidence of firing around the forcing cone. The residue on the cylinder face did rub off very easily. Everything else seems to check out, the bore looks good, the cylinder locks up tight, and underneath the extractor seems clean. This is my first new revolver so maybe I'm wrong, but could I have gotten someones return?

Sorry I can't help because I've never bought a "new" Ruger revolver BUT, S&W doesn't clean their revolvers after the test fire from what I've seen.

Actually, they dont clean them after firing... IIRC, they fire revolvers 3(?) times.... you should clearly be able to see residue on the face of the cylinder around some of the chamber holes but not all of them.... at least that is what I tend to notice when I look at new revolvers....

I've bought five new Ruger revolvers and received one new Ruger revolver as a gift over the last couple of years and all of them had signs of being fired. I called Ruger after I bought the first one because like you, I wondered if the revolver was used. A nice lady mentioned three test shots at the factory just as PT1911 stated. I didn't call Ruger after purchasing (or receiving) any of the other five.

:)

I have a new LCR that had been shot..

several times by Ruger and was not cleaned. The note in the box stated that the gun was test fired .

My Ruger Blackhawk was test fired and included one of the shell casings in an envelope.

At least with a dirty "new" gun you know that it has passed some sort of quality control inspection. That is a lot better than a new gun that has never been inspected before leaving the factory. Hopefully most of the lemons are caught this ways first!

On top of that, most if not all gun stores will not take a return on a gun. They will if it is defective, and back to the manufacturer it goes.

Thanks for the replies. It was definitely fired more than 3 rounds, was fired at least 5. But your putting my mind at ease a bit with it. Everything else on the gun checks out so I'm sure its fine, was almost more of the principle of the thing. Didn't want someone selling me a used gun as new.

Every factory new gun I have purchased, autoloader or revolver, has been factory test fired and shipped without cleaning. CZ, Sig, Colt, Ruger - none of them clean them after test firing. Why would they? It would be a significant added expense to them that would just get passed on to us.

GreenMTNLife,
If all the cylinders were fired you might be right about the gun being fired after it left the factory. IMO you should call Ruger and ask them. It's possible since the LCR is so new they are firing all 5 cylinders but then again, maybe not. What harm can come by calling them?

Ruger was somewhat helpful. Guy pretty much said sometimes they fire 3 sometimes all 5. and confirmed that they do not clean the guns after test fires.
