Does a cylinder wear FORWARD, toward the forcing cone?

I suspect that MartinS is right, and I would be very suprised if it left Ruger with a .003" barrel/cylinder gap. Usually they are .006" - .010".

I will assume that the cylinder face is flat and true (although it might be that it isn't). If this is the case and the revolver was returned to Ruger I suspect they would use a cutter with a pilot (to keep the cut square) to trim about .003" off of the back of the barrel. This could be done with a file, but the cut might be angled, and that wouldn't be good.

At this point I would call Ruger's Customer Service and see what they might say.

It appears to me, intuitively, from the drag marks on the cylinder that your cylinder is not rotating concentric to the barrel. In other words, it’s actually at a slight angle to the bore/barrel. This happens overtime with heavy loads or tens of thousands of rounds. You might want to check your base pin (cylinder pin) using a dial indicator for run out. It could be bent or worn, or someone replaced it to ill effect. Curious what a dial indicator would show. Short of that, you could roll it on a piece of glass to check for wobble. Your fix might be as easy as replacing the base pin, and a few shims. Check Brownell’s catalogue…

Called and scheduled an appointment to go back to Ruger. It'll be interesting to see what they say about it. And, like I said, a 45 acp cylinder might not hurt to have around anyways.

I'm thinking I'll get the ol' dial gauge out and check the pin. They don't want me to send it in until after the holiday so, I'll have some time to do that. I'll let you know what I find out.

thanks!

Update

This is the first time I've ever shipped a firearm, and the fact that my LGS said he'd do it for $18, I figured that I'd let him do it. I waited a little time after the July holiday so that they had time to work through the bunch of guns that were probably waiting for them when they returned to work.

I took it down to the LGS and he put it in the mail that day. I just called, after about two weeks to see if he'd heard anything about it and he said that they sent it back. Turns out that he'd sent it off to the Prescott AZ address but, being a revolver, it should have gone to N.H. So, they sent it back to him. He did say that they sent a shipping label along with it to send it to the right facility. Even though "we" shipped it to the wrong place, they took customer service one step further and took care of the shipping to the right place!

They haven't even set eyes on it yet but I felt they should get a good "attaboy!" from me so far. Thank you Ruger!

FYI The Ruger factory does not always do a good job when setting the barrel/cylinder gap. I have a Vaquero that the b/c gap measured .003" from one side and .001" on the other!!! Since I also shoot black powder I had the b/c gap opened up to .008" (which is the thickness of a business card).

Just received a call from Sandy at Ruger. She confirmed that the cylinder has excessive endplay and she is sending it to get a new cylinder fitted.

You can add this to the ever-growing list of examples of excellent customer service at RUGER!

I'll let you know when I see it.

Big Brown Truck just stopped!

Brown dropped off a package and the young guy hands it to me and smiles. I think he's seen stuff from this address before.

As I opened the box, she was even purdier than I remembered. Then I noticed why! I had asked if Ruger could include a new screw for the old grips that I had for the gun. I would gladly pay for any additional $.

Instead, they sent a NEW set of grips! :what: Didn't expect that!

The gun looks great, and the issue with the cylinder hitting the forcing cone is gone. I haven't checked the cylinder gap yet with a gauge.

It came in a new box with a new cylinder, new grips and all the paperwork. Great job Ruger! THAT is why I will soon have EIGHT Rugers in my safe!
