Can I use a suppressor sized for a .243 on a 22-250, as long as the barrel threads match? Legally is it "one gun, one suppressor", or can you have one suppressor for multiple rifles?

Federal law considers a suppressor a separate firearm so you can use it in as many rifles as you like (subject to your state's laws of course). Some like to buy a .308 suppressor and then use it on a variety of rifles.

You can use a suppressor on as many hosts as you want as long as the can is rated for the particular round. Most pistol caliber suppressors will work with any pistol round smaller than the bore size, but you have to be careful with rifle suppressors because of the higher pressures. For example, most .308 suppressors will be fine with .223, but I would check with the manufacturer before shooting say, .30-378 Weatherby Mag through a suppressor rated for only .308.

Great, thanks. Would I see a significant (greater than 5 decibels) loss in performance if I put a 308 can on a 223? Or is it not that much?

My experience is because the supersonic crack of the .223 is louder than the .308 crack the difference between my HVT-QD on a .223 vs. my Halo in minimal. What I noticed the most is the extra size and weight. That, and the hard to find ~$95 QD adapters are why I ended up also getting a Halo (which mounts to the A2 flash hider).

Suppressors are generally made in 7.62 and 5.56 and nothing short of custom work in between
