A pair of nib berettas 84 fs cheetahs

Hello everyone, last week I purshased 2 Berettas 84 FS in .380 ACP ( In my country for a semiauto pistol is the highest caliber that is legal ).

I was very happy with the finish, feel and most 13 + 1 magazine capacity, I was doing a search on the internet looking for some recoil buffers for this pistols, when I came a cross the Smith & Wesson Forum, there was a person saying that he and a trainer at his shooting range were having probles with their cheetahs 84 that were purshased last sumer.

the problem they were reporting was the slide catch spring was broken making the slide catch to come out of the pistol frame and the slide almos out of the frame, the other was a trigger spring damaged.

Does any of you own a BERETTA 84FS CHEETAH, what is your experience with yours, how good or how bad is the Beretta 84 FS, any isue like the one I mention above????

I no longe feel confident with this two pitols, I will have peace of mind untill I am sure that the guy at the S&W forum simply got a lemon, the worse is that I can not return this NIB pistols since they were purshaded at my Country Armed Forces Store, that is operated by the ARMY and had to go trough a month of paperwork and other stuff.

Has any of you have ever had this same problem, is the 84FS a bad designed pistol ?????, is it quality as worse as that ????

How big are the chances that this could happen to my pistols ???? is there any quality recall by Beretta on this Issue ???? how often could this Issue hapen with other owners?? that post on the S & W Forum is the only one I had found on the internet, no other Issues.

I shoot at a range that rents these pistols. They do A LOT of rental work and won't carry unreliable pistols for rent. I know they permanently pulled their .50 cal Dessert Eagles because of repeated spring failures and temporarily stopped renting the Sig 250 when it first came out due to reliability issues...

If these are used pistols you'd probably want to replace the major springs as general maintenance.

No they are not ussed pistols, they are brand new in the original box, they are imported to my country by the beovernment to put them on sale to the citizens, are brand new.

I think the general reputation of the Beretta .380s
are of a quality design. Can you order a spare set of
springs from Beretta to have on hand? How much
shooting at a target range or ?? do you anticipate
doing in the future? Just curious, what country are
you in Charmal?

Good to my knowledge

I have a BERETTA 84. It is a police trade in and was issued to state police officers for off duty carry and as a backup gun.

It has not shown any problems so far.

Back in the 1980's, these pistols were popular with police who carried them off duty. Then compact 9m.m. were rare and .40 calibers did not exist.

I still think enough of them to give one to my wife for protection.

I have three of these Berettas and have yet to have any problem with any one of them. The Beretta 84/85 is the best .380 on the market. I would not worry about your new ones. Go shoot them, go enjoy them. These are not guns known to have defects. Yes, a spring can break anytime, but the "slide almost coming off" is a non-problem. Don't worry about it. Can you post a link to the guy on the S&W forum?

I have owned both the Beretta Model 84 and the Model 85. Both guns were totally reliable and I never had any problems with any springs, the slide release lever, or the trigger on either pistol. These guns were extremely well designed and constructed using very high quality materials. If you have any concerns try contacting Beretta Customer Service with your inquiries.

I have no acces to the S & W forum, since I only have hotmail, doesn not allow me to register on their site.

I calle Beretta´s C S, and they told me that de do not have so far any quality recall on any spring or internal parts, or any defective design Issue on the 84 FS cHeetah frame, he told me that some times on the forums not every one post the rest of the story prior of any Issue, tha the only way that that coul hapen was that if the owner of the pistol strip down the pistol for cleaning that could be possible that that person coul install back the spring catch in thewrong position forcing the spring in to place and then braking a litle piece of the spring leg or the other cause could be mistreating the pistol or removing more pieces than what is needed to fiels trip for cleaning.

so do you think that I throw my money to the trash by buying this two Berettas for my personal protection???? ( remember in my country the highest caliber that is legal on a semi auto is the .380 AUTO )

No, you bought the best pistol you could, your Beretta should function perfectly well for many thousands of rounds. I think the information you read was not very accurate.

The Beretta 84/85 guns are probably the highest quality 380 available. Just because one person on the Internet had a problem doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the design or your guns. Even if the defect rate was only 1 in a 1000, that 1 person would be all over the internet making it seem like there is some huge problem. If everyone made their purchase decisions based on internet complaints, no one would own a gun since there is always someone complaining about every gun.

I bought one a few years ago used. Law enforcement trade in. I like it better than the Bersa Thunder for the range, not as well for concealed carry. Very nice feel, good accuracy. No reliability issues. You did not throw your money away. Grea gun. You probably can't wear it out.

Regular maintenance is required on al machines. How many people would think they could drive a car for ever without changing the oil or replacing the brakes?

You can find people online reporting problems with any pistol ever made.

The Beretta 84 is a great gun (I carry one myself occasionally). Mine has been 100% reliable and is very high quality. They should serve you well. Enjoy them!

I agree. I have a Beretta M85FS and its been flawless. One of my favorite pistols.

I read the same post on the Beretta Forum.

The guy that posted it didn't stay around for long, claiming he was an expert and knew what he was talking about. He had no explanation for the firearm instructor who apparently was continuing to use the malfunctioning firearm.

Those who "post and run" are generally considered trolls and their comments should be considered as less than genuine.

If I was limited to the .380 caliber handgun I would certainly choose the Beretta 84 (Cheetah). It is, without a doubt, a quality handgun.

I own three Browning BDA's which were actually manufactured by Beretta. The BDA and the 84/Cheetah use the same magazines. The Beretta is a better design, IMHO, than the BDA- better sights, frame mounted safety and a round hammer.

Previous to the S&W/Beretta Forum comment, the only issue I've read about the BDA/84 is in regards to the possibility of deforming the feedramp with certain hollowpoint bullets.

Apparently, some HP loadings with a sharp edge can eventually deform the feed ramp. FMJ and most other HP's do not affect the feed ramp. Maybe another forum member can add to this information.

Dogtown Tom, how big are the chances of damaging or deforming the feedramp with HP´s ammo.... is this is a design defect of the pistol, is the barrel have a bad heat treatment ( too soft ) or the hardness is out of spec. ????

Has Beretta done any thing about that Issue ???? if it hapen, how can it be fixed???

Please try to remember what was the brand of hollowpoint that I should not use on my Beretta 84.

I've tried searching and can't find that post. What I remember is that someone reported damage to their feedramp from heavy use of one particular hollow point cartridge. Apparently this cartridge had a sharp exposed nose and would batter against the feed ramp, eventually causing failure to feed.

This post was at least three years ago. I've not heard of similiar problems since then, so I wouldn't worry about it in the least.

I found several posts that recommend a polishing of the feed ramp if you have problems with feeding.
