So one of my local gun shops had a pile of project guns for me this weekend. most are going out to parts however there was a JC Higgins 308 ( Husky improved Mauser) bolt action rifle with a bad stock and broken bottom metal.

The bottom metal is no problem to replace as any commercial 98 Mauser bottom metal will work as well as the action screws.

The biggest problem is going to be finding a stock for it. I could use a large ring Mauser stock and fill in with bedding material.

However I would like to find something that fits it properly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have heard that Boyds will make a stock for you if you send your rifle into them to pattern has anybody had any luck with this?

I'm pretty sure that I don't understand the issue. Is the JC Higgins/Husqvarna barreled action a 98/large ring action chambered in 308 Win, or are you referring to the HVA small ring "improved" Mauser? If the latter, I would have thought that a stock designed for the Swedish 96 would be a neater modification than filling in a 98 stock. The Boyd's "At One" stock that I got for my '94 Sixties Bubba, was a very good fit.

It is the hva action. I thought the Swede 96 used small ring screw spacing.

And there we have it. You have surpassed my very limited knowledge! I was of the, seemingly mistaken, impression that the HVA improved shared small ring dimensions.

Give Boyds a ring and ask for a measurement on screw spacing. Maybe the they differences are small enough that they can send one undrilled? If not, sorry for the red herring.

Contacted Boyds, they told me to bad so sad, they won't cut stocks for anything not on their website. I will try Simpsons,.

If you end up going the custom route, Richards Microfit is usually game for stock duplication projects. I had them make up a couple for me in the past -- quality is variable (two of mine came out just fine, but one had an messy barrel channel), but they're fairly cheap as these things go. http://www.rifle-stocks.com/

Try a Google search using the terms 'gun stock duplication' -- or just wait and see who else gets recommended here.
