Anyone price out the spring? Will the stock folower work? How will one of these work on my express with the dimples?

In order:
You can buy new, longer springs from a number of sources, including Wilson's, Brownell's, Wolf, and others.

The stock follower is what Remington uses in the extension too.

If you want to install an extension on an Express with the "dimples" you'll have to remove the dimples first.
Do a search on this forum, there's loads of info on how to remove them.

I just ordered some, and as I did I thanked you silently. Now I thank you publicly.

Removing the dimples sounds harder than it is. I drilled them out, beginning with a relatively small drill bit to make a starter hole as a guide. Then I used progressively larger drill bits to open the hole until the indentation inside the tube was gone. The last step was a bit of wet-and-dry paper wrapped around a dowel I chucked into the drill to make sure to remove all burrs. It was a successful operation.

Just curious...

I have a blued 870P. If I were to purchase one of these, would it be possible to take off the parkerizing and finish it in blue? Yes, I'm anal and prefer my parts to match!

Thanks!

Yes, it's possible.

Any re-finisher could either bead blast it and blue it to a flat black, or at your option, polish the parts to give it anything from a nice satin blue to a mirror blue.

Can a sling swivel be added with the extension. I assume the Wilson type that goes under the magazine cap would not work with the +2 extension,is that correct.

Do they make a swivel that adapts to the remington extension barrel clamp?

Thanks!

One other question...

To protect the barrel, does anyone suggest putting some sort of protective barrier between the mag extension bracket and the barrel. If so, what material would you suggest? My barrel is blued and would like to protect it as best I can from scratches. Thanks.

The "Dimples" are two small tabs of metal pressed into the magazine tube near the front end.
These inter-lock with the plastic magazine spring retainer to hold it in place.

Before a magazine extension can be installed on an Express, these tabs have to be removed.

You can attach a sling swivel to the factory barrel clamp.
Some clamps already have a swivel attaching stud on the bottom of the clamp.
If not, there's a hole in the bottom of the clamp into which you can install a stud.

A neater idea is to buy an Uncle Mike's Push Button sling swivel. This swivel snaps directly into the hole in the clamp:

To use, you discard the supplied mounting stud, and just snap the swivel into the hole in the clamp.
I'm sure that Uncle Mike's would sell just the swivel if you email them.

The factory extension clamp is pretty good about not scratching the barrel.
The extension has a groove around the tube, and the clamp screw passes through this groove and interlocks with the tube.
This prevents the clamp from moving under recoil.

For extra protection, you can put two pieces of black electrician's tape on the barrel end of the clamp to pad the clamp and prevent it from contacting the barrel.
As long as you don't get the barrel so hot that the tape melts, this works well and is easy to replace.

Another good material is to buy some black plastic shim stock and cut two pieces to fit.

I just ordered one. $20 shipped... good deal. Now I just need to find someone to refinish it for me, and buy a longer mag spring.

Any recommendations as to the best extended mag spring out there? Can you order the factory mag spring from Remington that comes on 870P's with the factory mag extension?

Chris

The springs and followers from Wilson are pretty nice. The may be Wolff springs but I am not sure. In any case I have a couple and they seem fine. At 12.00 for the pair, pretty cheap too.

I received mine today. It looks brand new and quite a savings. It does come with the sling stud, it is only missing a sling swivel and I have a bunch of them laying around.

All I need is my 18" barrel and my new spring/follower to show up and I can go to the range and play.

Many thanks for the heads- up. I ordered a couple and they came in today, they look like new.

Mine arrived today too. They look new too. Count me as one of those indebted to you for your tip. Thank you again.
