I shoot the .308 208 grain AMAX bullets out of my R700 5R milspec, and they work great. The muzzle velocity is at 2720 feet per second. I tried the RL 17 but turns out in a side by side test that the IMR 4320 produced a higher velocity. I did have to seat the bullets out past 2.8in (which means loading one at a time), but the accuracy achieved was well worth it. The last time I was at the range I made a five shot .4 inch group at 300 yds and another 5 shot .9 in group at 500 yds.

This is a fallacy. See my post over here for why
I figured that much, but honestly I don't think it make a great deal of difference. I would settle for any of the moderate capacity 6.5s (including .260Rem., 6.5x55Swede, 6.5Creedmoor, or even 6.5x47Lapua). I favor the .260 because components are more available at less expense, but I wish more rifle manufacturers would build any of the aforementioned (particularly Winchester).

:)

5R- interesting about IMR 4320. Might have to look into it.

Here's a Range Report thread I started for the rifle if anyone is interested. So far with 200 SMKs & RL17 I've worked up to around 2635 fps with no pressure signs, and that's in this short Savage throat. Still have more testing to do plus back ups.
