Hey guys, I got a new 336 for Christmas and a scope along with it. So my question is, do I have to install the hammer spur if I mount a scope on it?

Yes

The scope will make operation of the hammer, particularly use of the half cock safety, difficult to say the least. Put the offset hammer extension on. The extension that comes with your 336 is ambidexturous.

OK thank you. And also forgot to add one more thing, my trigger can move back and forth really easily with or without anything in the magazine in the chamber. My Dad said it was normal, is this true?

Hi Barney...

The hammer extension is really a safety matter. With a scope on the gun it is real easy to fumble with the hammer. Definitely use and love that extension!

Your Dad is right. If the hammer is down your trigger will have a goodly amount of slack in it because it hasn't been engaged on the hammer. When you pull (or lever) the hammer back it will then engage the trigger sear.

You doubt your Dad? For shame, for shame.

Yes its true. The triggers have some wiggle in them. Also when you install the hammer spur you might want to use a little BLUE loctite to keep it from getting loose.

Also check your screws for tightness after you shoot it. Use proper fitting screw drivers to do this also.

A Wild West trigger will "fix" that ... along with the factory 5lb to 6lb of pull required for the trigger to break.

:)

Barny, you may want to check out the XS Lever Rail from XS Sights if you don't have rings/bases for your Marlin yet. The Lever Rail will allow you to mount the scope virtually anywhere you want it, and you'll be able to get sufficient eye relief. The rail only weighs 75 grams.

:)

That looks nice 1858, does it come with the peep hole sight like in the diagram?

Barny, you can buy just the rail for $60 or the rail plus the ghost ring rear and front sight for $150. Here's a photo of my XLR with the XS Lever Rail. I have Warne QR rings (Weaver/Picatinny style) and as you can see, I'm able to move the scope forward (and still centered between the rings) as much as I need in order to obtain the proper (and safe) amount of eye relief.

You need to remove the rear ghost ring (as shown above) to mount the scope, but the scope could be removed and the ghost ring sight reinstalled with just one screw if necessary.

:)

welcome to the club bud

if you dont like teh scope an aperature sight is a good one to look into i got my from skinner sights

you may want to check out the marlinowners.com and click on the forum

spur is nice but not required. trigger is normal. take off the stock and take a half a coil off each end of the hammer spring to improve your trigger greatly.

I can't thank you guys enough. Paintball dude, I was looking at the skinner sights today, and it looks like you can just use the pre tapped scope mounts for that, am I correct?

yeah

tim skinner is on the marlin forum and has his own section he doesnt charge for shipping and his quality is first rate

i went with the low pro peep its great on my brush gun for short shots with the aperature removed (it actually makes it into a ghostring ) and with the aperature installed is great for longer shots

with a bit of a smaller aperature i would gladly shoot at 100-200 yards with mine
