I picked up a Sistema from Gander Mountain last year for $ 250.00, changed out all the springs and pins, use Metalform 7 round mags and I have never had a failure in 1000 rounds. If I was so inclined, I would not hesitate to carry it concealed.
Hope this is of some help and keep us posted as to what you decide to do.
Rock Island pistols are one of the best bargains out there today. Great customer service too. Check out this place for more in-depth info: http://forum.m1911.org/forumdisplay.php?f=17
If you're on a budget, I'd take a real hard look at the Springfield 1911-A1 GI model...
They are under $500 and fantastic for the money.
BTW, the search function is your friend...If you don't get many responses, it's because people are tired of answering this question(it gets asked almost on a daily basis).
I've got a Charles Daly 1911, made by the same parent company. Good gun. Looks like death warmed over due to lots of time in a holster, and the barrel is pretty shot out, but it's reliable. I'd liken it to my Chevy Cobalt. It's no Corvette, but it runs and don't look too bad. Unless it's parked next to a Corvette. The RIA is also getting high marks from those who own them, I don't have one myself. The Springfield GI, as mentioned, isn't much more money. I'd feel comfortable buying either one.

If you're on a budget ( or not) a RIA is a real good buy. Mine has never malfuntioned. You won't be shooting 1" groups W/ it ( or at least I don't ) but it will hit center mass everytime. definetely worth the money
