A Rifle For All Seasons. What Caliber Is Your Choice?

.223/5.56. It is what SWMBO has for an HD rifle, and I certainly would be able to use it for that, I have hunted deer with it, if I'm headed to the rifle range, at least one of the .223/5.56 rifles goes with me, and for defense from predators 2 or 4 legged in the wild, an AR will be able to do the job, just keep firing until it drops.

I'd have to say the .308. I wouldn't enjoy (regularly) shooting anything more powerful. I also don't live where bears roam so that's not a worry.

If I *DID* have to account for bears, as in emergency self-defense but not ethical hunting, then a semi-auto .308 might be sufficient enough to plug 'em with a couple rounds before I died. But I just can't see answering this thread with a 375 H&H or 338 Win Mag.

So I guess my answer is an FN SCAR or PWS MK216, but I own neither.

For all seasons in my area a 223 would do and it would be overkill for some critters. A coyote is our largest animal and they don't get large. They burn up all their calories hunting more.
