A Salute To You Folks In Wisconsin...

Now we need to get our law makers to remove the two day wait and/or background check charge from concealed carry permit owners.

Won't happen. $13 a pop is a huge moneymaker for the State; during the mad rush in November for pistols, it was well over $100,000 of easy tax revenue.

Might get the "cooling off" waiting period passed, but I doubt it anytime soon. Too many places like Eau Claire where the only cop ever killed in the line of duty was responding to a domestic disturbance. RPW would consider that a third rail. Once we have a decade or two of real world responsible CCW? Then think about it.

It's the first known case of a concealed carry permit holder in Wisconsin shooting someone, and it happened in the middle of a Milwaukee grocery store, where a customer stopped two men from robbing the store by shooting one of them, Milwaukee police said.

Interesting. I don't know that I would draw and fire to prevent a robbery at a store. Try to find cover and draw, yes, shoot if they started randomly shooting.

We all have our own thoughts on when to draw/use force.

I would do exactly as you say too, Fred, but who knows the exact circumstances. When you are faced with a guy wielding a shotgun, it is hard to say how aggressive his intent is. If he is just holding it or if he is shoving it in peoples' faces, etc.

Of course, under that new Wisconsin CCW law, the CCW permit holder was committing misdemeanor trespassing as the store did have a no-weapons sign posted. It would leave them legal open to a civil suit by the store. Not likely, perhaps, but still.

Interested to hear how this turns out. I'm assuming that since the shooter isn't in jail as of today, that he is not a felon and is probably was not illegally (without a CCW) carrying a firearm.

Aldi armed robbery

MILWAUKEE — The citizen who took out his gun and shot an armed robbery suspect inside a Milwaukee grocery store will not be criminally charged.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. Monday at the Aldi store near 76th and Villard on the city’s north side. Police say the suspect came into the Aldi store armed with a shotgun, with the intent to rob the store, but the suspect left empty-handed. A customer pulled out his weapon, and shot the suspect.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office tells FOX6 News surveillance video from within the store vindicates the citizen. It shows he was first protecting his pregnant wife and then shot the suspect.

The citizen who fired the shot was a concealed carry license holder. But the district attorney’s office says that did not play into the decision on charging.

While a good thing for the shooter, this decision also appears to set the precedent that the No Weapons signs are also legally meaningless. Irregardless of what you think about them, their presence with a heavy penalty for violation was a key element in getting Republican votes from wealthy parts of the state who don't really want the public to be able to be armed. This could make it easier for those opposed to CCW to get it overturned after the Governor and several state senators are recalled later this summer.

Good to hear all turned out well for everyone involved. Kudos to the law abiding CCW holder that protected his family from "death or grave bodily harm".

wLewis, I think you may have it wrong. It is not a misdemeanor to CCW in an establishment with a "no weapons" sign. It is a "class B forfeiture" per the state statute, which is a fine up to $1,000.

p.s. wlewis, our Governor won't be recalled this year. Doesn't surprise me that everyone around you thinks he will be recalled as you live in the "Peoples Republic of Madison". Those of us out here in the hinterlands still quietly support our Governor, and will make our thoughts known come election time. Cheers!

p.p.s. Back to Mr. Lapins original question on training, I took my original 6 hour CCW class at a local technical college, and a few weeks ago took Massad Ayoob's MAG-20 class in Saukville, WI. That was an additional 20 hours over two days. Really went in depth into the legal aspects, psychological aftermath, etc. Very highly recommended! So I have 26 hours of training under my belt, and just got the Magpul "Art of the Dynamic Handgun" DVD set to watch. Educating myself is a never ending quest.

I, for one, would enjoy hearing from new permit holders as their licenses appear. It will be fun to keep count. Breaking 50k before the first of the year would be encouraging.

I can verify 68000 before February 1st. ;-) 2 week wait for me. The rush must be slowing a bit now.

Little late to the thread, permit #4XXX. I have carried everyday since, most businesses open to the public have not posted. I am in outside sales and do run into a fair amount of private businesses, mainly manufacturing, posting.
