I guess it would be as easy as a phone call to S&W,but can a 629-1 be beefed up to where the 3&4 and some 2s are?

Is the difference more than just internals?

Maybe a better way to ask the question is this.

What is the difference between the -1 & -2 models and the -2E and up models.

musher ,sell it and buy a -4!
I'm not that worried about it ,It will be just fine for what i use this one for,"it's a protection gun,not for huntin"so the loads are kept below 210 gr.But and endurance package wouldn't hurt.I hope i'm not startin a thread about weak 629s,hahahahahahahahah:D

My 629-1 is only exposed to factory 240gr loads, so I don't have too many fears for it taking a pounding it can't walk away from. (I use my Bisquero to launch the elephant manglers. :) ) Not sure what all exactly the endurance package entailed, but wasn't a tougher (better heat-treated?) frame and yoke part of it?

Yes. S&W did mine for free. Well, they did charge me $8.50 for shipping and handling.

New cylinder, new star, new cylinder stop, new cylinder stop spring, new oversize hand, couple other do-dads.

Love 'em. Made me a loyal S&W owner. Bought some more Smith's afterwards and talked some of my students into buying S&W's.

WT,

Did they stamp the frame after the upgrade? Or are the new parts very distinctive?

Surely there's some easy way to determine if S&W has upgraded a -1 so that a subsequent owner doesn't ship the gun to them for a second upgrade...

There is a letter-number combination stamped above the M629-1 on the frame. It consists of 3 letters and 4 numbers. I think that is S&W's record of the changes.

There are also some numbers-letters on the crane. Maybe parts numbers.

The new parts are pretty obvious. The cylinder is "shinier" (is that a proper word?) as is the cyclinder stop.

I also have the S&W work orders.

Works like a champ now.

The string of letters/numbers above the model number on the frame is the serial number.

Mine says:

x2825

B3

on the crane.

I'm kind of surprised they don't stamp something somewhere--maybe they keep a record by serial number at the factory...

They must have SOME way of avoiding a double upgrade if an owner sells a gun without the paperwork.

Talked to S&W today...

The tech I got said there's no way to retrofit the endurance package to the -1 model. According to him, part of the upgrade is heavier pivots on most of the internals--the pivots are part of the frame and can't be replaced.

He recommended shooting only ammo with bullets lighter than 240 grains.

I'm a little skeptical about some of this. I'm thinking about waiting for a week or two and calling back. Maybe I'll get a different tech and a different story.

BTW, Jim he did mention that 0.004 to 0.010 was acceptable cylinder gap according to S&W. That top number seems a bit large to me...
