A stupid question: how does an Ithaca 66 work?

All the lever actions I've shot have used the lever to force out the empty round and bring in one to chamber. The 66 appears to be a single shot. So, does the lever simply pull the hammer back? I've never shot anything like this before.

I don't believe it does anything except cam the locking bolt back out of the barrel so it will break open to load it.
