^ That's just sick! I've seen railroad ties and files, but never a cable. How does the edge hold up? Did you have to heat treat? Details please on how you made it?

cable knife.

Yo mama, Logging cable is basally 1080 steel and it can be forged welded together to make knives or a Katana. Heat treating is easy, all you have to do is heat to non-magnetic then quench in a warm oil and then temper at 350 to 400 Fahrenheit. Here is a link to a tutorial. http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=7696&hl=
If you read post #70 that is how I process cable.

I tried to buy a few tons. Of course, I had a network problem (this was in Afghanistan), and got overbid at the last minute. :(

Many a can of beans has been opened by this Fällkniven.

It has been a thoroughly decent knife, without serious faults other than being too thick, too expensive and the grip being too dang small. :scrutiny:

Here's my Cowboy Bowie by Joe Mandt. It's 300 layer random Damascus of 1080 and 15N20 forged into over an 8+" blade.

The Super Blackhawk in .44mag is just there for show. ;)

Damascus knife.

Blueskyjaunte, Beautiful Damascus knife. Most people don’t realize it took 40 to 50 hours to make that blade and that’s not counting the sheath .

A little different.

Here is another one of my knifes that is a little different, this knife is a three layer steel sandwich. The left and right sides are cable Damascus. The center and cutting edge is 8670m, and the handle is elk antler.

A local knifemaker named Paul Savage just finished this one up for me. W2 steel and Hawaiian Koa wood:

I work on a dredging ship, and we replace 120' lengths of 1" and 1.5" thick steel cables all the time... maybe next time I'll get the torch and cut 16" lengths out to get some bowies made.

EmGeeGeorge, 16” of 1.5”cable is tuff stuff to forge It can be done by hand but will be a real work out .
Here are two knifes made out of logging cable. What looks like file work on the back of these blades is cable that I deliberately did not forge weld together.
