Some 15 years ago, I met a Vietnam veteran through a mutual friend.
This guy asked our friend "Who's the effengee?"
To which I replied: "I'm Jim, but I don't technically qualify as an effengee seeing as to how I never served..." Because I knew a then little known G.I. jargon I became a good friend to a man I grew a deep respect for. He had scars, both physical and mental, but because a long-haired teenage punk, (It was the 80's, what can I say?) took the time to sit and just talk to him, well, his wife once told me that I was a good influence on him because he only had daughters and thought of me as the son he didn't have, that it was good for the healing process. He wouldn't talk to anyone else about his war experiences and for that I felt honored. He didn't like opening up, and hated the shrink that the V.A. issued him. We would often go to the range where he would teach me military shooting techniques, and first exposed me to the differences between shooting for fun and shooting to improve my skills. He tested me in the rain, the snow, and the gorgeous days. I had always just walked out in my parent's backyard, set up a pie plate at 50 feet and let loose 5 rounds at it to check the zero of my scope, then I'd go hunting for the season. I had considered myself a good shot, I have never lost an animal I hit with a bullet, but through our friendship I became a marksman and one fine day he stated:
"You know, you're right, you don't technically qualify as an effengee."
effengee is just the vocalization of an anacronym whichs reads: F.N.G.
F. cking New Guy... a term for the replacements of a platoon. Also known as a cherry, virgin, and some more colorful ones I won't contribute, as there usually are ladies present.
But the name stuck, and when I first got my computer off the dirt road and onto the information superhighway, I couldn't think of a better name...
Besides all the really cool military/weapons related names were taken.
