A very speculative scenario:

Now we're moving along! I said there was other food out there, and you even get to plant a garden. So sure let's say you get 100 yd spool of fishing line and a dozen hooks, and there's a small lake and a stream nearby. I never said you could only eat what you shoot. I picked the location because of the lushness of the forest there and the wide variety of flora and fauna. Interesting that the thoughts of so many went to self-defense. OK, let's add that there will be no bears (I can do this via the magic of the imaginary scenario) and no Mt Lions which of course, don't exist in those states (officially) anyway, oh and no "Deliverance" encounters. I figure the most dangerous thing would be yourself, and maybe snakes.

Interesting that the thoughts of so many went to self-defense.

No offense to any members here but perhaps the fact that every other post is about AR's or AK's would be a good indicator of priorities as well.

Good topic though. It's something most people would fail miserably at I'm afraid. Just think how much better the average American would have faired 100 years ago vs. today.

I've got land and a cabin in Wilkes County NC. Plenty of small game and deer and turkeys. I rarely have to leave the porch to shoot my dinner.

Gimmy a .22 single shot with 200rds.

A 12ga with 100rds of 3" #4's.

And any scoped .30 cal with 65 rds.

Plus a good ultralight fishing pole with a few small lures.

Oh,.....one more thing....a couple gallons of that Wilkes County Finest 'shine...

365 rounds? OOOooo boy... here goes.

200 Rounds of .22 Magnum for my Marlin Stainless .22 Magnum.

100 Rounds of .22lr for my S&W 22A and my Revelation single shot .22

65 Rounds of 300 Magnum for my Stevens Model 200

I'd bring a bottle or two of gun oil also.

"Ok, I'll play

How about:

A 4"-6" .357 revolver with 75 rounds of heavy magnums and 75 rounds of38s for small game.

A rifle-sighted, smooth-bore 12 gauge. (If I can have a second barrel I'll take a 28" vent rib too).

35 slugs

40 heavy loads for turkey/duck/geese loads

140 #6/7 1/2 bird shot"

Since I didn't pay attention to the "as many guns as I want" clause I'll take the same but add a lever-action .357 and an 26-28" 12 gauge O/U to go with the wheelgun and rifle sighted pump.

Small game is just that - one shot-one meal. Only 365 meals in a year may not even be survivable.

Deer can be more than one meal per shot, but how many more? How long will you keep the meat from each deer edible?

I second that. Art, i see your point, but i am not going to waste wat little ammo i have on squrills, i would rather go after deer, and just put the meat in a plastic bag in a stream. This does not mean that i would give up shooting small game, i would just reduce it as much as possible. Small game is also much harder to hit.

Seal the bag, or i might as well just forget the bag, but if i can't do that, just place it downstream, away from where i fish and gather water.

there's a cave at the spot i'll be camping at for the year, if you guys kill a deer i'll trade you for 1/4 of the meat and you can smoke it in my cave so it will preserve longer

well you took bears, mt lions, and 2 legged vermin out of the scenario, but i believe my choices would stay the same. i see no need for a centerfire rifle, as most shots would be 100yd and under in thick woods, plus as was mentioned "hunting" as most know it would be time better spent on the garden, foraging, water collection, fire and shelter maintenance.

i'd feel pretty good about a ruger single six and a 12 guage. i like the 870, but i would probably be ok with a single shot too. after all, ammo is limited, so being sure of my shots and not shucking shells and firing away would wise.

ammo....i'd want say, 50 slugs, 250 .22, and the rest in various shot.

as for as many guns as i want, a spare of each should be fine.

what I would bring...

I would bring my 22lr revolver, with 220 rounds of 22lr and 30 rat shot for snakes. (The lr's would be to keep pest out of the garden) I would also bring a single shot handi rifle in .223 or 30-30. (Less to go wrong on the gun, and the rounds would be fine for short distances.) The only other thing I can think to bring would be a sling shot, great for small game and ammo can be found on the ground.

Stainless Ruger Mark II or III 6-10" bull barrel scoped with 4x Leupold. 200 rounds of assorted 22 ammo.

Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 pump gun 90 rounds of assorted

Savage 16 weather Warrior in 308 75 rounds.

Well since its as many guns as we want

I'd take a...

a few handguns of an unknown same model and heavy caliber (25 rounds for emergency close range use should be enough for the year when the long guns fail)

a few double barrel O/U that are 12 gaug e 3 1/2 and some .30 caliber rifle or a 45/70 probably for utility
All shells would be 3 1/2" (why not get the most firepower to make up for a perhaps bad shot or take about 5 geese at once sitting on a pond - if you have to survive why not line up the necks and fire?)
hmm 340 left... so lets say...
75 of the rifle caliber
265 left so lets say...
150 of #4
the rest #6 probably

365 shots is more than enough to survive.
Shoot grouse on the ground if you have to etc... etc... etc...

.. and don't forget a couple Mosin-Nagant rifles for the various duties of "boat oar, war club, tent pole, spear, pole vault and firewood"
