A young un....

I'm afraid that I don't know the first thing about getting a useful edge on any knife. But I got very tired of dulling my good knives on mundane tasks like cutting open boxes and such.

So I carry a replaceable blade razor knife for those mundane tasks.

I have a few of Grandpaws old carbon steel knives, and several newer USA Schrades.

I have some real junk too!

Anyhow I agree that the two young uns are well spoken. Something you don't find often in todays society!

or even worse - a 28ga.

Ha, I Learned on my grandpa's 20 and 28 guages.;)

Theres no need to call me by my screen name. Call me Nick.

Steve, you and I have some things in common...

And to those complementing my Etiquette and grammer, I thank you.

Pennsylvania..McKeesport to be exact. Sometimes would drive over to Ohio just to find it in bottles.

Ah. Then I suppose we're even. My mothers family is from Steubenville, OH. When there, I'd have to indulge in a Yuengling or two. ;) Still can't get it in MI.

In fact, I'm headed down there for the 4th. It seems my Great Grandfathers pocket knives are being turned over to me. I have no idea what they are or the condition they are in but I'm sure they have some stories to tell.

Of course, while I'm down there I might have a Yuengling and I'll have to stop by Blind Horse Knives.

Nick,

Stick around. You're fittin' right in. ;)

I hope I can write cohesive sentences. Being a teenager, I hang out on Facebook and AIM a lot. Half the time I can't tell what people are saying.

SM: I have a Sodbuster Jr with an induced patina, and a Medium Stockman with CV and yellow that was my first good knife, received seven years ago. It has a nice, not induced patina, and the yellow handles have slightly changed color.
I also have my Grandpa's Iver Johnson .410 (haven't shot it) and his Colt Single Action Frontier Scout.
Do I get pizza and soda?

RE: Soda.
There are many varieties of soda out there. No matter who tires, no-one can even come close to touching the glory of Coke. Pepsi does it alright, RC and store brand OK, but Coke still reigns supreme.
There are various ways to consume Coke. There are the 12oz cans you can keep in your fridge at home. Then there are the 20oz bottles you get at the gas station to go with your Gold-n-cheez and Moon Pie. Then, there are paper cups that you get a fast food.
There are glasses you get at sit-down restraunts. Plastic are good, as are glass.
But, the Holy Grail of Coke consumption devices is the glass bottle. I believe it is 6.5oz. It isn't that much, say for dinner (that's why there is lemonade and tea). It is good for a quick snack, or for a drink at dinner, like adults who have cocktails and wine. Glass keeps the drink nice and cold. These are usually served in more "folksy" enviroments- old wood convenience store on the side of Lookout Mountain, that seafood restraunt outside Kiawah Island that used to be a fire station- you get the picture.
Open with the bottle opener attached to the cooler, or with your Swiss Army Knife.

With regards to non-cola soda- all root beer is good, if it is served cold. Barqs, Mug, are both good, as is A&W, especially at an A&W restraunt (particulary when that is combined with a Long John Silvers. Fried clams + root beer = happy Preston :D )
There are bottled root beers as well, and they are good. Of mention is Boylon's, who still uses cane sugar rather than corn syrup, and Virgils.

Fruit sodas, again Boylon's is really good, due to the cane sugar. IBC and Stewarts also make very good fruit sodas. Crush, Sunkist, NuGrape, etc, are all good, but I think Grape and Orange Nehi take the cake there.

Ginger ale: Schwepps, Seagrams, Canada Dry are all good. However, if you want some real ginger ale, find yourself a place that sells Seagrams. Warning: do not get this for you only drink at dinner, or for your drink from a gas station. The stuff is delicious, but it is also quite hot. It is best served on a cold night.

Finally, iced tea. Now, I was born in Michigan and lived there five years, but I've lived in the South (Alabama and North Carolina). My parents are southern too (Helena and Memphis). I eat grits, biscuits, country fried steak, ocra, cracklins, fried chicken, corn bread, and consider Macaroni and Cheese a vegetable and pie a food group.

I don't drink sweet tea. Don't really care for it. I like the particular flavors of unsweetened tea. Kind of like coffee- I drink my coffee black.

(flame suit on, ramble suit off)

And, while we're on the subject of names, call me Pres or Preston.

Macaroni and Cheese a vegetable and pie a food group

OMG, it's an SM clone! I thought he'd burned the hive out!

Oh well, he's here now so we'll have to treat him like a guest (much nicer than how we treat family).

Pres, Nick, remember that carbon steel is good, but so is "stainless". Just as there are bad "stainless steels" out there so are there bad carbon steels so don't be seduced by all the talk of carbon being king.

BTW, outside the US (and along the Mexican border) you can still get Coke made with cane sugar.;)

Here I logged in and was going to post exactly that.

Someone needs to pull some ancestry records , Steve and Pres are related...SOMEWHERE :)

There is no "one" steel. Just like there is no one soda , one brand of knife , one color of women's hair...oh wait yes there is RED !!! ;)

Either way , this is a darn good place to hang out.

Very true.. And you won't see any steel snobbery in this forum, which is very refreshing. While I prefer 1095 I do own stainless even S30V.

And no Tactical VS Traditional fights, quite laid back and relaxed in this forum.Everyone gets along.

Here is some older steel.

OlderKnives.gif

On the left is an OLD Case that I THINK I've had since a pup.
In the middle a Schrade that was Grandpaws.
On the right a Camillus that was Grandpaws.

Here is some newer steel.

Newerknives.gif

On the left is a Schrade USA 30T that is a back up to the one I gave Dad as he is sure to lose it someday. May not give him this one if he does!
In the middle is a Frost that came as a gift fairly recently. I had a choice between this one and a white scale one and green won!
On the right is a dang nice Case XX Trapper Yellow that a customer gave me after I fixed their pressure washer a couple years ago.

I tend to carry locking blade knives as I have folded a slipper or two on my fingers. Just never a really sharp one!

I have at least a dozen more knives but none have the character of these 6.

I don't think I'm related to Steve, we just think similarly.
Does Steve have red hair and Marfan's syndrome?
There is good stainless. And there is crappy stainless. And then there is mystery stainless that you think will suck but acually performs pretty well for its price point.

I may be dumb, but I ain't stoopid!

These associates of mine are into Case knives, patina, freehand sharpening , Ginger Ale, Root Beer , Coca-Cola, from a glass.

Still working on the Dr.Pepper with 'em...

Not going to fault 'em for Marconi and cheese.
They young.
They ain't been attached to a red head that would not cook, except Marconi & Cheese, and not only could she not do this right...she made a helluva mess and could not clean up after herself.

I'll skip on the Mac-n-Cheese...

Excuse us, we need to get head on and shoot some some 28 ga shotguns, fell some quail...

I know about the Stainless. I studied that for myself a few years ago. Like I said, It just kinda stays with me to go for carbon steel.

Im with you guys on the soda and things:)

Steve, that sounds about right, Lets get to shootin...

Pres, What'da say we be friends? I dont know if they can take us all

My latest addiction, I only have 13 models so far.

Please excuse the three Old timers that are Schrade+ stainless. Two models were not offered in carbon, and one was made after Schrade switched the model to Schrade+.

Same here.

I was out in the garage tinkering with my Case 3318 (yellow, CV) this afternoon. I decided to knock down the square shouldered bolsters and make it a bit more "pocket friendly".

Before that it was cleaning up this old Buck Creek Stockman.
knives08017.gif

And of course, my Imperial collection. All carbon steel.
knives08009.jpg

I got a few Old Timers in carbon steel as well ;) .

Chris

I forgot to mention Dr. Pepper.
I love the Dr.
Rupestris, that Case stockman in the model of the first knife I ever got (good knife at least)
I think I need to get a USA made Schrade. I think my friends gas station has a few left over.
Again, to carbon, I have had better luck sharpening it than I have stainless. (I don't have much luck sharpening at all)
What I wish is that more people liked Carbon steel. We do have some good stuff coming out of China and Tiawan these days, for very reasonable prices. The Rough Rider slipjoints are a good example.
I'm not in the knife industry, but how much more expensive is 1095 (or even, say, 1075) than whatever steel Rough Rider uses? Okapis and Opinels are still dirt cheap, and I don't see why carbon steel Rough Riders couldn't be either.

It's all about customer satisfaction, fellas, and most "customers" are not satisfied if their knife rusts or stains or patinas so they pick "still looks shiny" over takes and edge and holds it.
