I recently was involved in an m1151 rollover while on patrol. i was serving as the m240 gunner on the m1151 which is a very uparmored hmmwv. though i normally i am the tc that day i was gunning because there was a lt with us. and everyone knows they don't gun. anyway our driver missed the off ramp and he over corrected, we began to power slide, we did so 180 degrees and then we began to roll, 1 and 1/2 complete times until we came to a stop on top of the cement barriers on the side of the road.

i will say now that everyone is fine and no one was hurt, a couple headaches and a little bit of sorness.

now to keep this gun related i will fill ya'll in on what survived on my m4 and what didn't.

m4:
destroyed. the lower reciever was good to go for the most part but the barrel was totally a piece of twisted metal when it was over. the rail system came off and was another twisted hunk. there was no damamge that i could see to the gas tube though.

peq 15:
which is primarily plastic and is a ir, and visiable laser as well as an ir light and a whole bunch of other features that are to in depth for this thread. anyway it was destroyed and in about 5 pieces.

surefire scout light:
which is supposed to take a lickin and keep on tickin, and has a huge price tag, the tail cap was lost the lens was shatered in many many pieces, and there was a detent on the side of the flashlight tube that made battery removal impossible.

acog:
the only thing that showed zero signs of damage, i looked through the glass and as far as i could see it was good to go, i would like to mount it on another weapon and see if it is really g2g or not. hold zero etc.

thought this might be helpful and just some general fyi i know most people don't get to test thier equipment or would really want to to these lenghts but i figure i would share. thanks!

Did the barrel get stuck outside and crushed somehow, or did the bouncing around do the damage?

Tis funny that the optics are what survived on a gun, not the metal parts. Bet the ACOG makers (Trijicon, I think?) would love to hear the story.

Glad you and your guys are ok.

Acog and lower good, everything else FUBAR. I hear ya.

Where was your weapon that it received the damage?

Send your surefire to surefire with a letter. I bet you get a new one back.

I'd say do the same with the ACOG (if its not an issued one) and send it back to Trijicon. If it still good to go, they get the good PR and you probably get a new one. If its fubar'ed, they'll be able to tell you and you probably still get a new one.

i will defiently be sending in the surefire with a letter for sure, the acog is issued and there are many more to replace it in the arms room, but if it wasn't then i would certiantly do that to.

the m4 was beside me in the turret, since i blacked out after the initial hit i don't know what happened to the rifle and where it went, but i imagine that it was between the turret and pavement is how it got bent.

the driver will probally get a field grade article 15 they will take some rank and some money but the government won't get the full value out of him.

Better the weapon than you.

Did your driver have time to shout "rollover!" like the training vids tell us?

nope no time for the driver to say anything well if he did all i heard was myself say oh ........... many various words that are not suitable etc!:)

i am currently deployed and where i am at there is no way i can upload pics but i will be on rxr in about a week but i will upload them then when i get back home, i have them and alot of other pics to share!

I'm glad you're okay. My thoughts on the matter were, "how am I supposed to duck back down into the turret when centrifugal force is throwing me out?" The prospect terrified me.

Congratulations for viewing another sunrise! (Reference line #1 of my signature.)

I smell at LEAST six safety briefings coming your way. :scrutiny:

I suppose that day is further proof of why it is you earn all those "big bucks"!

what do you do possum? I ask cause we never drive over 25 mph except for cas evacs, but I know there are units out there, mainly PSD teams and the like that like to go fast. I'm in a MP unit.

good to hear you're ok, how did the 240 fair?

I remember when one of the other squads in my company got hit, 155 shell plus EFP 20 meters away from the truck, EFP aimed at the turret, his 240, M4 and 203 looked like swiss cheese, thankfully everyone only got some scratches and cuncusions.

Glad to hear everyone was ok, minus some replaceable weapons...My buddy in the army, who is home on emergency leave was telling me a story, the vehicle was a type of truck that holds a bunch of soldiers in the back(sorry, I'm completely ignorant on the name) about the tire hitting a piece of metal sticking out of the guard rail and they went over and dropped about 50 feet...About half of them weren't so lucky.:(

Good First Attempt

So, what happened to the m240?

Now that you've completed the first round of testing on the M4 platform, what are your plans for a similar test on the AK series?

We want charts, graphs, and pictures.

Hey, it's science, right?

Glad you made it.

Now clean up those boots.

:D

i am an 11b, e5 i normally tc the vehicle but i give the guys breaks everyonce in a while, we normally go fast all the time, we have done some psd work but not so much anymore, just our normal everyday patrols and missions.

the 240 and the turret shield was torn from the mount, resulting in the 240 having a slightly bent barrel, they are made tuff for sure.

if i ain't mistaken that is 1-325 from the 82nd airborne they were in an LMTV if it is the same incident that i heard about, yeah that was a sad day. their ao
pretty much borders ours and we work in each others areas alot.

thats interesting to hear about the 240, I was 11B for 6 years before being switched to 31B, was in a scout platoon, funny thing is I went six years without getting deployed, get changed to 31B and boom I'm in baghdad before the ink is dry on the MOS qual paperwork.

When do you rotate back to the states? I'm short timing it myself.

stay safe bro.

Having spent my career as an 11B I can verify if it can be broken, we will break it. We also have the bad habit of exceeding the 35 mph rule. Glad everyone is ok, get home safe.

Nothing like going to a foreign country to engage a ruthless enemy, and getting in a car accident. :neener: Hope your recovery will go well and better luck in the future.
