ABC’s "20/20" Seeking "Armed Citizen" Stories

Friday, April 06, 2007

Gun ban groups often claim that private citizens rarely, if ever, use guns in self-defense. ABC News’ "20/20" is now putting that claim to the test, asking viewers to submit their own real-life "Armed Citizen" stories. ABC’s website asks:

Have you ever defended yourself from a crime in your home, in your business, or in public by using a gun? Perhaps you warded off a potential attacker by simply showing a gun?

If you’ve personally used a gun in a legitimate act of self-protection against a criminal attacker, we encourage you to tell your story to ABC News. To tell your story, go to http://www.abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3015150 and complete their web form.

And to ensure that we at NRA know how many responses ABC gets, please send us a copy of your story by e-mailing [email protected]. You can also call NRA Public Affairs at (703) 267-1193.

fifteen minutes of fame

Doesn't this sound similar to the recently captured British Marines who were "encouraged" to tell their "stories" to the BBC and others?

I wish I knew some of the pseudonyms being used; but then, those "reporter -gatherers" are so devious as even to adopt new names and remain hidden. I find it hard to trust any of them.

What will be the odds given in Las Vegas, that when the "unbias report" is broadcast, that it will put the self defense in a good light or even dare to support the Second Amendment?

I was under the impression that the 20/20 segment was trustworthy.

Can't Win If You Never Play The Game!

Whether we think the story will be hostile or not, we need to participate when opportunites are offered. Michael Yon will tell you that one reason so many MSM stories on Iraq are negative is that the Public Affairs Office sees MSM as the enemy and cuts off access and creates the thing it fears.

Even if the story does not turn out postive, at least self-defense stories will help balance, to whatever amount, the story presented. I believe the facts will disclose very very few instances of abuse, and large numbers of success stories.

We have all complained about the media. You cannot win if you stand there and say that you are taking your marbles and going home and refuse to participate. Time to get in the game!

John Stossel of 20/20

is behind this. Solid pro-gun (and somewhat unpopular with his colleagues because of it).

Stossel has done pro-gun segments on 20/20 in the past, and has a book out debunking several liberal myths, including the myth of gun control.

Hugh Downs, TV newscaster, formerly of Today, is also pro-gun. Lou Dobbs of Fox (or is it CNN?) is another gunnie. And the CNN news talking head a few years ago -- Lynn Riussell? -- is/was a gunnie.

There are a few good guys in the network news business.

leopard spots

Alright. I'll curb my doubts, and wait and see.

I would rather be wrong on this and eat humble pie, than gloat and give the I told you so finger.

You are correct in stating that "we" need good PR.

And Stossels articles have been refreshing journalism. I appreciate him.

Hopefully it'll be done in a positive light. The more stories that are brought to light by the MSM the more people will realize that it CAN happen to them and police don't teleport to your location the second you hit send on your 911 call.
