ABC’s "20/20" Seeking "Armed Citizen" Stories

Friday, April 06, 2007

Gun ban groups often claim that private citizens rarely, if ever, use guns in self-defense. ABC News’ "20/20" is now putting that claim to the test, asking viewers to submit their own real-life "Armed Citizen" stories. ABC’s website asks:

Have you ever defended yourself from a crime in your home, in your business, or in public by using a gun? Perhaps you warded off a potential attacker by simply showing a gun?

If you’ve personally used a gun in a legitimate act of self-protection against a criminal attacker, we encourage you to tell your story to ABC News. To tell your story, go to http://www.abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3015150 and complete their web form.

And to ensure that we at NRA know how many responses ABC gets, please send us a copy of your story by e-mailing [email protected]. You can also call NRA Public Affairs at (703) 267-1193.

I agree with James T thomas. This kind of show, especially from ABC, NBC and others will never help gun owners in my opinion. They may air the stories but will edit and put them out in a way that will make anyone that has used a gun to defend themselves look like either a criminal type or a total A$$.

I think it depends on who at 20/20 is doing the story. If Stossel is the one that is doing it, then I wouldn't be worried about it but I don't know about all of the rest of the folks over there.

I've read Stossel's 'Give me a Break' and 'Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity' and I think he takes a good level-headed, Libertarian approach to just about everything.

I think Stossel does a better job after that big wrestler smacked him upside the head some years ago:D

For one the NRA is very image concious and cautious with the media in general, if they are notifying people to send in their stories both to ABC and the NRA i would deduce 20/20 is serious about making this a positive story for gun oners and those of us fighting for our rights, they are also in a position to publicly expose any unethical editing of stories.

I watch 20/20 often, John Stossel is in fact what most news agencies only claim to be, a fair and unbiased reporter. Many here might say he is pro gun, pro rights, conservative or so on, and link to posts that might show this. I think that due to his center line approach where he informs, but mostly leaves viewers to draw their own conclusion, that is so different from most news in comparison it seems he is more conservative than he actually is.

Also "shall issue" CCW reform in previously "may issue" or "won't issue" states, gun controls failure to prevent crime without disarming good citizens, and crime in general are popular topics that people tend to have a strong opinion about and that drives ratings higher. With many new Democrats in office there are several local and national bills that have gotten gun owners and the NRA off it's duff and to start to fight again.

Gun control's influence in general has been on a decline for years with record sales of arms and ammunition more citizens are becoming new gun owners. The crime spree that the brady's predict with the passing of every new CCW law and the sunset of the Brady Bill just didn't happen, and people know it.

Shows like Mail Call, Mythbusters, video games like MOH and HALO, Movies and so on get people who would normally not have much exposure to guns to develop a curiosity at least and oftentimes to become a gun owner themselves.

Concerns around terrorism, natural disasters and other SHTF scenarios are prompting many to consider purchasing a gun for protection, and reconsider their needs based on more commonly occuring burglaries, roberies and assaults.

All in all I think this is a good and fairly safe opportunity to make some headway in the fight for our rights and to show that POSITIVE NEWS for gun owners can drive up ratings too, afterall the numbers support us and the general pubic is coming around to our side.

"They" are NOT on our side. John Stossel is on our side. He happens to be a Libertarian journalist that will tell it like it is. If he is hosting the piece, then we'll likely be put in a good light. If anyone else there is hosting it, then well... :barf:

IMHO anyone that HAS had to use a gun for self defense, probably doesn't want to talk about it. Anyone that does talk about it will probably be taken out of context. Better to tell them to go pound sand.
