I'm about ready to get this youth rifle in 7mm-08 for my daughter for deer/elk/pronghorn. Cabela's has it on sale for $380. On top of the sale, TC is offering a $75 rebate, making the final cost $305.

Should I, or is this rifle no good?

I reload and plan to start her out with some Hogdon youth loads. I have a VXIII 2.5-8X36 lying around that would be a great fit. Daughter has a couple years until she will be ready for big game; right now she says it's too heavy.

I've read the magazine isn't the best, but people seem pleased otherwise. I'm assuming the factory bases are aluminum. Are there aftermarket ones out there?

A penny for your thoughts...

I'm glad you can get your hands on one. My local Cabela's didn't have a single one in stock. The gun counter guy was pretty agitated that they didn't send him any since they were going on sale. I was hoping to get my hands on one of the compacts in 243. Oh well, I still might go back and get that CVA Hunter in 243.

I have a T/C Icon (same action, fancy wood) in 243. I have yet to shoot a group LARGER than 0.75" with any factory ammo (bullet weights 75 gr to 100 gr) I have fed it.

My assessment (and supported by the experience of a friend that has a 7-08 that has done quite well with Prvi Partizan ammo) is that the rifles built on this action shoot quite well.

BTW, at least IMHO, the T/C Icon/Venture, the Tikka T3, and the Ruger American actions are three peas in a pod. All of mine shoot well.

At the price point you cited, I would consider it a no-brainer.

And that scope is the same one I have on my hunting 308. It had, to my eyes, the best low light performance of the 15 or scopes I looked at.

No, but DrT answered you question. BTW nice write up on tc rifle in latest American Rifleman mag. I was thinking how much more your scope cost than the rifle you are putting it on. I have some of those setups myself. lol

TC Venture is an under rated rifle IMO. I've owned a few of them in different calibers all of them have shot well. In fact I've sold them all to friends or people at the range who saw how well the shot and "had to have them" that tells me everything I need to know.

BTW a 1:9 twist is a great twist for a 7mm-08 it will handle 120 and 140 grain bullets just fine. For an easy load that will drop big game and be easy on the shoulder, a 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip with a reduced load of H-4895 will be the ticket. Assuming accuracy of course.

On order! I will be out chasing elk with broadheads for the next month, so it will be a bit until I can start working up a youth load for it. Thinking H4895 with some 120g sp bullets to start. Will post a range report later.

I have a T/C Venture in .270W and it shot .5" or less out of the box. 308$ is a great price. Their customer service is first class. Normally I float the barrel and bed the actions on every rifle I ever bought EXCEPT the Venture- when a rifle shoots that good out of the box, leave it alone. BTW, it's going to take awhile before you get your rebate. The venture has an adjustable trigger which can be adjusted without removing the action from the stock.
