k31. it keeps good company with your mosin and the wood may look natty but they shoot really well. your budget supports a mount & scope and possibly the bayonet also.

If you want to do optics, put an Ultimak rail on it. They are rock solid mounts and require no gunsmithing.
http://www.ultimak.com/

The Ultimak rails are scout mounts that replace the entire gas tube. But, you also have the option of using the side mount for optics. I don't think all AKs have the side mount, but I could be wrong.

the side rail is out of the question for putting a sight on it. unless i dawn the color and clothes of urban youth and start shooting my gun sideways. still looking for good deal on mosin ammo.

Domino i looked at the AK you showed me. could i put a wood furniture on it so it would look like this?

what about attaching optics to it via a rail?

You talking about the WASR-10? They should be able to take any type of furniture that is for a stamped AK reciever so I see no reason why not. I don't know what is the make of that furniture but it looks more or less like some sort of custom set on a really nice milled Bulgarian AK or something. Don't expect the WASR-10 to look anything near that good! The standard furniture on the WASR-10 is nothing to great but it can be painted like mine...

If you do opt to change it there are plenty of aftermarket stocks to choose from. A couple of good sources...

Just search around, remember stamped reciever...

As far as mounting optics, I believe all WASR-10 rifles come with a side mounted rail for use with mounts and optics. You can do any number of things with this sort of mount. You can simply get a Picatinny or weaver mount that will allow the mounting of any sort of optics you want or you could go authentic and get the Russian stuff.

I hear the Kobra's are pretty nice. The sky is pretty much the limit on AK type weapons as there are many accessories available. Mine is quite durable and reliable but I have not experienced any sort of amazing accuracy with the use of cheap ammo and iron sights. I expect you won't either if you go this route. Honestly, an AK is a great weapon but if it were my "only" rifle I would feel a bit lacking in the accuracy department and I would prefer something with a bit more inherent accuracy.

May I suggest another option? If you do like the AR-15 type weapons you could buy a basic "kit" that comes with all parts minus the lower reciever for ~$500. All you would need to do at that point is buy the lower reciever of your choice (usually around $80-120) and assemble the weapon by yourself. It would more or less meet your budget and you would gain an intimate knowledge of your weapon.

Also, the AR-15 is going to be much easier to shoot good. Don't get me wrong, I love my AK-47 but the first time I shot a M16 I qualified as marksmen and scored 50 out of 50 in the Air Force BMT. This was an old sloppy weapon and I still probably couldn't do that with any AK type.

But if you opt for the AK than I would go with the Saiga .308 16"

http://www.raacfirearms.com/Saiga_option.htm

They can be found under $400 and all you would need to buy is some sort of low power scope and a couple of 20 round magazines and you would have an excellent weapon that would be 90% of an M1A or similar. A far better general purpose weapon than either the AR-15 or x39 AK, IMHO.

Here is my WASR-10 with the Ultimak rail.

At first, I thought about using the side rail, and mounting a POSP scope, but I opted for the scout mount, and that is what I got.

I have been told that the Stamped ones were lower quality than their counterparts. i would really like to snag a genuine russian AK, how much would that set me back?

The Saiga "is" a made in Russia, its just not milled. Sure the milled recievers are nicer, but not really necessary. The AK-47 was designed to be a stamped weapon for mass production. Russian tooling and machining was not up to par in the 1940's so the first AK's were milled because that is all they knew how to do. They were also more expensive. I believe it wasn't until the 50's till the Russians were actually able to produce stamped AKM's.

Basically, the stamped reciever AK's are going to last just as long as the milled ones IMHO. They are also going to be lighter as well.

Or it might cost abunch, aplenty, aheap, abit, or maybe even awholelot more than you have.

oh come on, that is hardly alot to get upset over. ;)

yeah i can't afford that. still need ammo for a mosin though. if you have any links with a good price on surplus please link me, Thank you!

The AK74 uses 5.45x39 ammo. Fairly cheap, similar to NATO 5.56 that our US forces use. Russian manufacture. Seems to cost about $175/1000. Note that 223/5.56 ammo is more expensive right now than AK-47 ammo.

classicarms.us has 5.45x39 1080 round tins for 139 and the polish tantel for 490 to shoot it.

AK74 which fires the .223 my reasoning for this is because it is a cheaper round than the 47’s .308

the side rail is out of the question for putting a sight on it. unless i dawn the color and clothes of urban youth and start shooting my gun sideways

Ok, first thing's first. The AK-74 is chambered in 5.45 which is definitely NOT .223 or 5.56 the Ak-47 is chambered in 7.62x39mm not .308 or 7.62x51 NATO. Sagia does make rifles in these chamberings, but you've probably never heard of those.

Secondly, a side mount is called a side mount because it mounts to the rail on the left side of the receiver and sits above the dust cover. Not because it mounts the sights on the side of the weapon in some homeboy night sights fashion.

I suggest you read up on the Ak style rifles before you go and buy one. There is plenty of good information available on the internet.

Wow I picked one up 2 years ago and they where $200!
Well to be specific mine is a WASR 3, but I dont think they have changed any. Spare mags where the expensive part, 3 for $75.

I mentioned the SKS in my earlier post, so you already know that I agree with Drgong. Classic Arms has a good reputation and often has good deals. Right now they are offering new Saigas in .223 for $329.95 or 7.62X39 for $349.95 (includes 3 extra 10 round mags in 7.62x39 only). The also have excellent grade Yugo SKSs for $199.95 and lots of surplus bolt guns, AKs and even a plain vanilla AR-15.

My Norinco SKS (as you probably know) has a chrome-lined barrel and the only ammo which costs less than bulk x39 is the x54R for my MN 44, leaving the .22 LR at the bottom of the price scale.

Even a Yugo might be outstanding value for your money, but my Norinco seems easier to move through the house, under tree limbs etc, having neither the bayonet nor grenade launcher. These extend the center-of-gravity and make the rifle feel awkward after carrying around my shorter/lighter Nor. Be aware that a number of Yugos were fed corrosive ammo, causing damage.
Samco recently sold corrosive x39 ammo from Yugoslavia, and the price was about the same as that for the good ammo elsewhere.
