I am in the process of getting an AI in 338 LPM and a Sako TRG 42 in .300 WM...

would love to reach out and touch targets at about 1500 meters eventually.

However cant figure out what glass. Have read Zak's guides and those have just confused me further...
Its been a long time coming, and now that there is the budget for a scope around 2-3K per rifle dont want to get it wrong.

Btw would love to shoot sub MoA and see the holes... I cant shoot for crap though...

These are groups I average at 100 M with a CZ 452 @100 Meters with various types of ammo and a cheap baraska scope...

I would have thought the decision would be pretty simple if you've read my guides and budgeted $2-3k per gun: S&B and USO are the two super high-end choices. Of those two, I prefer the S&B. The most objective reason on the larger caliber guns is that the eye relief is longer and the exit pupil is larger, which makes it easier to track the target during recoil on the 300/338's.

There are three basic S&B PMII models: the 3-12x50, the 4-16, and the 5-25x56mm. If you want the double-turn elevation knob AND a cm/metric/mil-based elevation knob, knock out the 4-16 'cause it doesn't exist. The 12x of the 3-12x50 maxes out in my opinion around 1300 yards, so if you seriously want to go further, that leaves the 5-25x56mm. This is a BIG scope. If you don't care about getting cm/mil knobs, then you could go with the 4-16x50mm double-turn (MOA).

Premier Reticle, in conjunction with some ex-S&B designers in Germany, is bringing a first-focal plane scope to market late this summer, the first will be a 3-15 and will be the USMC SSDS contract scope (which is actually through Premier and not S&B, according to posts on SH). If you can wait, I think that will be worth a look and considerably cheaper than the S&B.

In summary if you need to buy today: I recommend going metric (cm/mil), having knobs that match, getting the double-turn elevation knob for enough elevation, P4-Fine reticle. The 5-25x56mm is one hell of a scope, but very large. I run it on my 338LM, but on my other rifles I shoot the 3-12x50mm. With optics as clear as the S&B glass, there is less need for high magnification.

Oh, with regard to seeing hits. Past about 200-250 yards, you aren't going to be able to see .33 caliber holes with anything appropriate on a rifle. At 100, you can see .223 hits with even the 3-12x50
