i am building a new springfield high cap 1911a1 full custom carry gun and since i am new to carrying just thought i would pick the brains of the people that have carried 1911's a while
my question's what are the basic modifications for 1911 pistols for carry pupose
i plan to fully smooth the whole pistol "melted look"
under cut the trigger guard "higher grip"
soap bar front grip w 30 lpi
30 lpi main spring housing
heini sights
lower ejection port
i have a national match Kart barrel/bushing
Videki adj trigger
and what is the standard trigger weight for a 1911 carry gun

Personally, I would not go under 4 pounds for a carry gun. 4 1/2 might be even better in a high-stress situation.

Not so sure I would go with an adjustable trigger, but if I did?
I would lock-tight the set screw in place while allowing plenty of over-travel for dirt to get in the way and still go bang.

No over-size or ambi safety for sure, as they tend to get bumped off too easy. I have no problem whatsoever hitting a stock GI safety, but if you do, consider a small combat thumb safety and not a full blown race-gun paddle thumb safety.

NO extended mag release.
NO extended slide release.
NO full-length guide rod.
NO Wilson Shock-Buff.

The match barrel and bushing is O.K., but I would make sure the match chamber will accept TC and WC shaped bullets without them hitting the rifling leade.
I also wouldn't set them up to "match" tightness, again for reliability when the gun gets full of belly-button lint. I would want the bushing set up loose enough to take-down without needing a bushing wrench.

I use the extended controls and don't find any problem with them on my carry gun, it seems subjective to me. I've heard some negatives about them but I'm have nothing but success with them.

I too use extended controls but are the Wilson combat extended slide release and single sided thumb safety both of which are the tactical versions which are very narrow.
I run my trigger in the 4-5lb range and i find it perfect with practice as its not too light but not so firm it throw your shot off, Smoothness and trigger break is more important that the pull weight imo.

I was going to comment...but RC nailed it.

I removed my extended mag release after I once ejected a mag while in line at wal-mart.

I find that the ambi-safety just takes up space on a weapon who’s most valuable asset (to me) is it’s thinness. I like to carry it as opposed to my glock because it is so thin…why make it wider?

Don’t even think about that Wilson combat extended slide stop, either. I shoot with high thumbs and when I test fired a buddy’s 1911 with that, I inadvertently locked the slide back rather often.

Perfect carry 1911 for me, now that I've carried one for a few years? Officer or commander sized, bob tailed and GI spec except for a skeletonized hammer, great sights, some great checkering on the front/back straps and maybe an extended beaver tail. No high cap, no extended or widened controls, no trigger work, no fancy nothing. Just dead reliable and easy to carry.
