ok im really liking the ability to work the 243 for deer to ground squirrel. anyone have any warningd for the remington 700 sps varmint with a 1-9 1/8" twist. hink the 55-58 grainers wil be ok in that and shoot decent?

Those bullets are at the very light end of the 243 offerings. You might have better luck with a 70 grain bullet. I like the 70 grain Speer TNT bullets for varmints. Your barrel twist is sufficiently fast that it will work fine for all bullet weights up to and including 105 - 110 grains.

I have used .243" Nosler 55 grain Ballistic tips over 52.5 grains of H414/CCI 250 primer for a chronographed speed right at 4000 fps, and .280" 3 shot 100 yards group. This less than max load came from Nosler, and in my rifle is safe w/o signs of undue pressure. Very flat shooting, and it literally vaporizes crows on contact.

My rifle is a custom Mauser using a very heavy 1-in-10" Shaw barrel, where I usually use 75 grain and heavier bullets that get even better accuracy, and was surprised they shot as well as they did.

Good luck.

556 - I popped quite a few crows this past summer with my Fireball. The Nosler 40 grain Ballistic Tips and the Sierra 40 grain Blitzking's are both super performers in my gun. The crows hate me because I've gutted too many of their buddies. I shoot one and set it out in plain view for all the others to see. They will try and "help" their fallen commrade - then I get one or two more before they get wise and fly off.

That's a good story Flashhole!

I would sit near the bottom of a hill with a recently flooded field in front, and even with the Crows knowing I was there, they would plop down where they figured they were safe.... (((CRACK))), and another black puff of smoke.

They sure are smart birds, but as you mention will go in after one falls with seemingly reckless abandon. Gotta love the caw-caws!

After I posted, I went to my test target folder, and the number of shots for the load I quoted was at least 4 and may have been five... All the better, and even more reason to stick with it!

God it's hard to believe its been that many years since I shot that group with the little purple tipped bullets of death. :(:)

I've never checked, but my Sako is fairly slow-twist. Doesn't like 100-grain bullets.

But 55 through 85? Happy meal! The 55s do quite nicely on prairie poodles, and the 85's do just right on coyotes and deer. I've used the Hornady 70-grain Spire Points, and they group pretty tightly...
