i just won a remington 700 sps in 243 win. the barrel is a 1-9 and 1/8th twist. im going to do up some loads for this rifle and i was wondering if anyone could give me a recomendation on bullet weights to try first. seems like the twist rate is a little on the high side so i was thinking it might perform better with some heavier bullets, maybe 90 ish grains or so.... just trying to punch paper for right now, not hunting with it....yet.

thanks

65, 70, 75, 85, 90, 100, & 105 will work just fine.

Depending on what your eventual use will be, start out and develop a load for that type of bullet.

Varmint hunting? Go lighter varmint bullets.
Deer hunting? Go heavier big game type bullets.

Paper punching? Whatever floats your boat.

Your 1-9.125 twist should handle them all well.
Just like a 1-9 6mm Remington does.

I don't know much about this rifle yet but 65gr V-MAX is shooting great.

I don't know about 700 but the bolt is up side down in the 770 & snags on the neck of the round in the mag.

My 770 loves the Hornady 87gr sp bullet #2440 & a dose of starting load of IMR 4895

It`s a9in. twist also & I`m trying to cast for it not much in the way of 6mm/243 casting stuff available but have managed to get 3.5in. groups at 100yds traveling 2K/second.

But to get to where I`m at the cost of alloys alone makes it a labor of love not savings .

But man It`s fun wringing 1 out !! Especially when the 11yr. old baby girl is waiting to shoot the extra left overs !!! & Young eyes makes for a good spotter !!

I use 58 gr moly with Varget for my long range prairie dog load and have killed several out to 300 yards...that is measured with a range finder. I hear folks brag about 400-500 yards, but I don't believe it. I can hold on top of a dog's back at 300 yds and it will drop about an inch or so, which means I hit hit dead center. I have some Sierra 60 gr HP that are almost as good. I shoot a Remington 700 VLS .243...very accurate heavy barreled gun.
