OK you experienced AR guys, how much difference is there between the accuracy of a standard hand guard and a free floated barrel all else being equal in an AR15/M-4? I'm thinking specifically of a standard weight 16" carbine in 5.56 or 6.8SPC.

Not much really, until you start cranking down on a sling. A freefloat will give you a stable platform for optics, lights, etc, and a sling attachment point that won't apply leverage to your barrel.

What he said. It keep tension from a sling or bipod off of the barrel. For a lot of shooting you wont notice it, but for precision shooting it becomes very important.

But...if you have a crap barrel and other crap parts it helps even less.

A free float also works for an ar the same way it does for a bolt action. It allows the barrel to be completely free of any misalignment in the stock and handguards. If something is causing your standard handguards to press against the barrel moreso in one spot than in others it can wreck your groups. I was getting 1" groups from my 6.8 with some 4 rail non-floating handguards. I switched to a free float tube and my groups are now .5" come to find out my delta ring was screwed up so it caused the discrepancy.
