accuracy problems..

Out of the box rifle, cheap ammo, no bench rest. You probably could see a NRA certified instructor and hang with bench rest shooters to see how to improve your game and equipment. Or be real happy that you can hit that pop can at 100 yards.

The op stated he wasn't satisfied with his present accuracy. He's looking for tips to test the accuracy of the rifle to eliminate it as the problem. My plain jane 700 got a facelift recently in the form of new stock, rings, mounts and scope. What hasn't changed is the 30+ years of shooting experience pulling the trigger. Thus, the practice, practice, practice.

Good point. Start by using a rest to try a variety of ammo in it. That establishes a baseline measure of how the gun shoots. Then have a professional Smith lighten the trigger, and maybe glass-bed it. Then try shooting from a rest again.
