Accurate 5744 Powder Pricing

The only way I would use AA5744 in a pistol cartridge would be in a rifle/carbine length barrel. It is simply too slow to work well in a pistol. Just my .02. I know there is data for it, but at the end of the day, there are better powders for that application.
Western Powders or now Hodgdon don't recommend using the powder in pistol rounds anymore, but at that time in silhouette shooting, we were all looking for anything that would give us an edge.

5744, Lovex D060, and Shooters World Buffalo Rifle are so close in burning rate and other characteristics that they are practically the same powder. If you can find some SW Buffalo it will probably cost less than 5744. I've used both powders and they use the same load data. The Buffalo usually burns a little cleaner than the 5744.
That is an interesting factoid. I have an Uberti 1885 in 45-70 I’m trying to find an accurate black powder replica load for. And after reading the forums everyone suggests 5744 and the price alone has held me off. BUT I do have a pound of SW Buffalo Rifle.

My understanding is that the initial release of 5744 was surplus mortar increment powder. Bulky, not too high of pressure. If you ever played with mortars in the military, you know.
