My M39 has a barrel that freefloats between the receiver and end of the stock, where there is maybe a folded dollar bill's worth of space around the barrel. I'm thinking of opening that up so there is absolutely no contact if a sling were to pull down on the stock/handguard.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Or, does anyone have any M39 accurizing tips to share?

The Finns accurized them very well already, though you might be able to do a little more. IIRC, the accuracy standard an M39 HAD to meet in order to be accepted for military service was 3 shots into 5 centimeters at 150 meters (somebody correct me if I'm wrong; I don't have Doug Bowser's book handy at the moment). Many M39's have brass shims at the receiver-stock contact points, and they all have trigger jobs. My M39 has shot a 1 3/8" 4-shot group at 100 yards with 148-gr Wolf, not exactly known as target ammunition.

Optics would probably give the biggest benefit as far as practical accuracy, I suspect. Or try a set of Mojo aperture sights.
