Hello this is my first post, been lurking for a while.

I found a good deal on a DPMS LR-308 and picked it up today. I want to put an ACOG on it and I need help making a decision between these:

TA33R-9

TA11C

Main differences I see are doughnut of death / chevron , 3x / 3.5x and eye relief.

I can get the TA33 for $750 and the TA11C for $880.

I'm leaning toward the TA11C, but I know it's been around a while so maybe they have improved.

I have a TA33-9 amber chevron on an M1A. I like it because it is the big brother of the TA45 1.5X but still very light and compact. Eye relief is good but not quite as good as the TA45 which has a lot. FOV is good. My only real experience with the doughnut reticle was with an AUG--didn't care for it. To me the chevron is more precise but still quick enough.

No experience with the TA11. I really like the Compacts.

Editted: Looked on Trijicon webpage and noticed they both have the BDC/range estimation feature.

The TA11 still has more eye relief and still gets my vote.

The RCO I was issued had really short eye relief too--enough so that I got bumped on the eye brow plenty during recoil shooting from awkward positions or when the stock slipped off my IBA. I wouldn't want an inch and a half of eye relief on a 7.62. The eye-relief on the TA11 is the deal clincher for me.

Wouldn't an LR308 mainly be used for long range shooting? Did you get the 24" bull barrel> Are Trijicons desirable to use for distances beyond 600 yards, especially those under 4x magnification?

No it's the sportical, will be using it from 20-300 yards the majority of the time.

And actually, with a little practice, I think you'll find the rangefinder and BDC, as well as the overall optical clarity, allow a surprising amount of accuracy to be achieved with the ACOG at 500 to 600 yards. It wasn't all that difficult for me to hit the 500 yard pop-up targets with ball ammo and an M16A4 topped with an RCO. And 3.5x really isn't that much of a loss in magnification.

I have a TA33R-8 on one of my 5.56 ARs. I think the entire Compact ACOG line trumps the entire larger line(s).

Don't let the printed TA33 eye relief fool you. It is definitely longer than what shows on the Trijicon website.

I'm not sure about those 2 models but I have nothing but good to say about my TA01NSN or my TA31 or even my Trijicon Reflex. They make some great optics. I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice.

I've got a TA31RCO, and a TA11F. Both are nice, but I prefer the longer eye relief of the TA11, even on a 5.56. On a 7.62, I would go with the longer eye relief; no exceptions. Something @1.5" is likely going to get you smacked in the eye, in my experience.

I have used a TA33 and TA11 side by side on 5.56 rifles. I think the TA11 is overall the better scope; but the TA33 does 95% of what the TA11 can do at almost 1/3 of the weight and less cost. I also actually like the narrower field of view of the TA33 as it helps let you use both eyes open more easily. I did not notice any issues with eye relief either - I think some here may be confusing the TA33 with the more common TA31.

Reticle-wise, I run a donut on my TA11 and it works fine; but I prefer the chevron. The difference isn't enough to make me want to swap it out; but if I was buying new I would definitely get the chevron.

Here's why I think something is screwy with the eye relief of the TA33s on Trijicon's website.
TA33R-8
Eye Relief (in) 1.90
TA45R-2
Eye Relief (in) 3.60

Seems cut and dry, right?

Except that I owned both these optics at the same time, and here they are in comparison on two different carbines at the same time. TA45 on top, TA33 on bottom. Stocks at the same setting, and the optics are mounted at almost exactly the same T number (IIRC the 33 was one notch further to the rear).

Well I went with the TA33-9, they didn't actually have the TA33R in stock and had not idea how long the wait would be. Main reason I went this route was price, I didn't realize I would still need a $60 mount for the TA11C. I'm planning on heading out to the desert next weekend and will post up some pics and a little report. This is my first semi-auto rifle and scope, so I really appreciate the time everyone took to post their opinions. This site is really great!

Oh and for those who asked I got the scope at:

Gallenson's Gun Shop
(801) 328-2016
166 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 8411

They have two TA33-8 in stock right now for the same price. I got the last TA33-9.

I was looking at the TA11C here:

Manventureoutpost.com

I emailed them and they have two in stock as well.

FWIW I run the TA33R-9 on an M14 and it works great on a standard scope mount. I agree with the above posts that with it's light weight and cost it is the way to go and that eye relief is understated by the mfg.

Got it mounted up, yet to shoot it..
