I had a DPMS LR-308 and it was priced right and offered a lot of accuracy for the money. Very well built and affordable for just a little more than an AR-15.

+1 for DPMS

I got into trying my hand at long distance shooting about six months ago. I started out with a Remington SPS Tactical. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have done things a bit differently.

When I first started out, I looked at the Savages and decided not to go that way for a couple of reasons. The first was that I didn't like the floating bolt head. It just seemed to me to be a weak link in the chain. The second was that the action seemed to me to be longer than it needed to be. In any case, I decided to go with the Remington.

After having gotten the Remington, I noted a few things that were driving me nuts. It was very accurate (having shot many groups in the .2s and .3s), but it had its drawbacks. The first was that the bore was rough. I had to de-copper every 50 rounds or so. The second was that the chamber and throat were big/long, so I was getting some low velocities as compared to other rifles with better barrels. I don't think that this was specific to my rifle because I did some research and lots of guys were shooting some really heavy powder charges to get the velocity that they wanted out of their Remingtons. To fix all of this, I had my SPS re-barreled with a 22" Krieger. The tighter chamber and extra two inches of barrel got me just over 100 fps in velocity.

My point is that if I had it to do again, I'd find me a Remington 700 action (Brownells had them on sale for around $300), throw a good barrel on it and finish it up with an HS Precision stock. Now I have a rifle that shoots very well. Is capable of long strings of sustained fire. Doesn't foul much, if at all and is easy to clean. And I don't have to load my ammo to rediculous lengths to get to the lands.

I figure the cost would run something like this:

$300 for the action
$200 for the stock
$600 for the barrel on the rifle with lugs lapped
$100 for a Shilen trigger
$ 70 for a standard bottom metal

So...for around $1300, you can have a semi custom rifle that shoots probably better than you are capable of.

I just recently bought a used rifle with the above specs. It had 200 rounds through it. I paid the guy $1100 for it. I may have been able to get it for less, but the guy was a friend of mine, so I figured, what the heck.

My biggest single expenditure was the scope. I went with a Nightforce 5.5-22X50 with Zero Stops and NP-R2 reticle. I got it for around $1500. The base was another $100 plus the rings. I figure that I have about $3000 in my rig. A bit steep for me, but it does shoot really well and is fun.

Well, if you don't mind spending the money the hand down best AR-10 type platform is most certainly a Noveske out of Grants Pass OR. He does a lot of very specialized type work for the military and does build for the public also.
