Be careful out there.

Key elements of the 'impartial' media are now actively trying to intimidate lawful firearm owners based upon permit/registration data.

A Gannett publication just posted exact maps of all pistol permit holder in multiple NY State counties.

Let the media know you will not stand up to such thuggery.

I wonder if these people know they also published a list of people who do not have a pistol permits or quite possibly a firearm.

This just might be the gift gangs, burglars and muggers were looking for.

That's why MO doesn't allow any distribution of permit holders names. But we're ranked a backward, undeveloped state compared to others. Hmm?

I suspect that their publicizers largesse in doing this will be met in court with lawsuits. Class action lawyers are likely praising St. Nick for this timely gift of business that will give for the next year.

Unfortunately, innocent people will have to suffer to accomplish it.

yeah, thanks for helping the thieves Gannett

Let's stay focused on the activism element here and not get lost in ranting about this.

"Interent privacy issues have been written about both online and in print media. In almost every case the privacy of the individual has been championed by the media. Privacy issues with respect to government collection of information on individuals has been written about both online and in print media and in almost every case the privacy of the individual has been championed by the media. How is it now that Gannett's The Journal- News in White Plains now consider the privacy of individuals who have done nothing more than comply with the law no longer protected? How is it that Ms. Hasson considers it appropriate to provide the name and address of these same individuals? Since this violation of privacy seems appropriate to her would she consider having her address published to be reassuring? Would she be confident that the information wouldn't be abused? Would she feel safer? Many of the people who had their privacy violated by her paper don't. Such behavior is irresponsible. Other papers have published a redacted version of such information removing the names and addresses of the individual so their readers could see the distribution and concentration of permit holders without violating the privacy of the individual, but Ms. Hasson didn't see fit to do this. Shame on her and shame on Gannett for permitting her to be in a position to make this decision."

Someone in the comments asked about a map to of the paper's staff so I posted the link to the "Sauce for the goose" piece where her and her reporter's home addresses can be found.

I wouldn't want anyone that is on that map not to be able to compare the addresses to the map to see whether Ms. Hasson's home has a firearm associated with it.

Legislative response

http://www.nysenate.gov/press-relea...nt-journal-news-gun-permit-map-and-introduces

"Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) called for the Journal News Newspaper, a Gannett Company, to immediately remove a map they have posted on their website that unethically reveals homeowners with pistol permits in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties...

In the Assembly Ball multi-sponsored Assembly bill 820, legislation which would prohibit the public disclosure of information in an application for a pistol license with exceptions for prosecutors and police conducting an active investigation. Senator Ball will be introducing similar legislation, immediately. The bill would protect lawful gun owners from being targeted by thieves for firearm burglaries and eliminate a database criminals could use to extort their identity-theft victims."

Excellent. I hope it succeeds.

This 'article' was essentially the same as a newspaper run by the KKK publishing a list of where all the 'colored' people live.

Here in Virginia we went through the same thing in 2007 with the Roanoke Times and a so called "journalist" named Christian Trejebal.

See here for the original article (Minus the pulled database)
"Shedding light on concealed handguns": http://www.roanoke.com/editorials/trejbal/wb/108160

The backlash was immediate and coordinated. Interestingly, although the article still exists, they removed the comments section however due to the permanent record that is the internet a lot of what happened next is still available.

Initially the "times" tried to laugh the outraged citizens of VA off, but the story gained traction with such personalities as Michelle Malkin
(see article) http://michellemalkin.com/2007/03/13/treating-gun-owners-like-sex-offenders-in-the-name-of-sunshine/
and
(see article) http://townhall.com/columnists/mich.../the_witch_hunt_against_gun_owners/page/full/
and eventually CNN
(see video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN4smdjU1e8

For some time the "Times" defended it's position (See article): http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/109163

and Trejebal, who was, by this point becoming increasingly nervous. Apparently having HIS private info splashed around to people who didn't like him didn't sit very well and he was brought face to face with just how vulnerable that can make someone. (see article) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=116x14613

Eventually, as pressure mounted and advertisers started pulling their dollars (Much like what happened to Jim Zumbo) the paper caved, issuing a non-apology and pulling the database while trying to play it off as a moral decision.
(see article) http://www.roanoke.com/gunpermits/

Ultimately, the VA legislature broke land speed records to change the law making publishing full personal information illegal in this state.

I'm very VERY proud of the state of Virginia, the VCDL, and individual citizens including businesses who pulled their advertising dollars over this. People in NY need to get together and ACT. Calmly but repeatedly contact your legislature, as for the "newspaper", Hit 'em in the wallet and they'll pay attention, or sit back and be subtly branded into the same mental space as "sex offenders" and other perverts.

Class Action Lawsuit! Do we have any attorneys that work in that state? You may be able to file and donate proceeds of the suit to the NRA and other organizations, just as the Netflix class action suit donated all winnings to various law schools and other "charities." It's worth looking into.

Class Action Lawsuit!

What for? Publishing public information? They broke no law.

Anybody can walk into a sheriff's office in New York and ask for a list of pistol permit holders during office hours. They may have to pay for photocopies, but that's the only barrier. It's under the same licensing law that lets people know who has a marriage license or who is admitted to the bar.

Conspiracy charges can often occur where no other law was broken. Woe be the media who put together a similar map of interracial marriage or the like.

This is even more effective now that the right to own a handgun for protection in one's own home has been upheld as an individual right under the constitution.
