Should I go with a 13.7" Carbine length or a 14.5" Mid length?
I will be using their new 8 position piston gas block.

What's up with their new low mass carrier ($27 option)? I always though mass was a good thing (I use an M16 carrier in all my DI guns). What is the advantage?

13.7" barrels require a pined on Noveske Pig or similar length device where as a 14.5 build uses std length muzzle devices to attain 16" barrel length.

16" length is not an issue for me.
Unscheduled out of state travel might be a nice thing but the thought of pinning a match grade Shilen barrel, yuck!

I'm asking about performance and reliability considerations.

I bought a 7.5 in Adams Arms piston upper for one of my SBR builds, just because I like them really short. No issues at all, whereas my 7.5" DI ended up needing a 9mm buffer to really run right.

I prefer the piston ARs when I have a choice, and I've been accumulating choices over the years. My main reason is the piston guns seem to go a lot more rounds before I need to take them down for a cleaning, since I hate cleaning guns, its a big plus for me and a big part of the reason I enjoy the AKs so much.
