I have a RRA Elite CAR A4 - midlength with standard hand guards. I am not one to mount a whoe bunch of tacti-cool stuff on my gun. But I think a vertical forward grip my be a nice addition.

Since I don't want to spend the bucks to get a set of quadrail hand guards, I was poking around for some easy/cheap solution. I came across this . Anyone have experience with something similar?

Also, my rifle came with what RRA calls the Detachable tactical carry handle. It has the rear iron sight integrated in. I am planning on adding a 3-9x scope, but would like the option of easily switching between the tactical carry handle/sight and a scope mount without loosing zero in the scope.

RRA has a Flat Top Riser base for scopes. Looks promising. Thoughts on using this and switching between it and irons, yet retaining scope zero?

I reference to the add a rail system - My dept has a couple of those mounted on our AR's. We mostly have lights and lasers mounted to them - however, they are very sturdy and stand up to quite abit of abuse (as you can imagine a patrol rifle would take) so I bet they would work well for a vertical Grip.

As a far as the scope and zero issues - I would think that as long as the mount is as high as the Tactical Carry Handle then it would retain zero.

Keep in mind that anything as far as optics mounted to those carry handles will be quite high thus making a cheek piece a valuable asset.

If you want to switch between the carry handle and scope without any shift in your zero, the Larue mounts are tough to beat. The ARMS are also good in return to zero. If you are just looking for close-enough to hit silhouettes then the Armalite one-piece scope mount and similar mounts will return to zero fairly close as well.

I wouldn't mess with the riser base. It is easier just to get a scope mount that already sits as high as you want it to sit.

As to the vertical grip on an add-a-rail, you may like it or you may not. Some guys seem OK with it. Some guys get annoyed because the handguard that the rail is bolted to shifts as you apply pressure and bends or slides. As long as you aren't doing muzzle strikes, it should work well-enough; but I would try one first if you can swing it to see whether the minor movement is going to be a deal-killer for you.

I put the inexpensive UTG ar 4 rail handguard on like this one here for only $69 not a big whopping investiment by my standards with a lot of versatility and it came with the rubber covers.
