i got my new xl7 and love it but i have one problem its a tad off balance and so id like to add soem weight to the butt

the stock is hollow inside

what would be the best way of adding weight?

Usually, filling it with lead shot and some form of resin is suggested. I personally have never tried this, but my friends rifle has this done.

id prefer something not perm

but i do have lots of lead shot.....for reloading

im gonna create a new thread in the gunsmith area mods you can delete this if u want

Not sure if your buttplate or recoil paid will come off, if so you may be able to access the inside from that direction. On my .30-06 Rem 760, I took a small plastic medicine bottle and filled it with lead shot, and taped it shut. In the stock hole that is there to give access to the bolt that connects receiver to buttshock, put a piece of cotton, then drop in the medicine bottle, than another piece of cotton. This does two things: (1) adds weight to stock; (2) give a piston effect that absorbs recoil when the medicine bottle slides back when firing. The cotton keeps the movement silent. I'm not sure if you stock has this same opening or not, but all wood stocks do.

Get a wood one :p

I would fill a small plastic bag with lead shot, and then wrap it up real good with duct tape or something. I'm not sure how you would mount it, though. Velcro might work, assuming it isn't too much weight.

I'm not sure what the inside of the stock looks like but you could just get some modeling clay and mix it with some lead shot and press it in the void. Depending on the size of the space it may or may not flop around.

My Marlin 981T has a solid block that wieghs 4 ounces that is a slip fit n the buttstock.

You could add some ammo and survival stuff like matches and a small knife.

I wish it would occur to the makers of these platic stocks to make a buttplate that could be removed without tools just for this pupose.

deer i will once marlin makes one or i get the money to have one made

the opening is just like this one in post 5

rat if it wasnt for the reciol pad you could mod the stock to take an m-16 buttplate and i thought about that i probably have enough room in it for a full box of .308 but not .30-06

Rat huh? I haven't been called THAT before. Thats funny.

Sorry, I forgot about the recoil pad. I still like the idea of storing stuff in there.

If the Marlins sell well enough Boyd's will get around to making a stock for it.

Well good luck, Rat. LOL

lol like the name? lol

thats what im hoping either that or im gonna call them some time in the next few months and see what i need to do to ahve them make me one

I'd suggest taking some foam and cutting it so it snugly fits from the hand grip to where you want to add the weight. Then I would take another piece of foam and cut it until it fits the rest of the void. I would then take the desired weight of lead shot taped up real good in a bag and cut out some of the 2nd foam in the middle until the bag fits snugly inside.

That way it will not move or rattle and you can always pull the pieces of foam out with the tightly wrapped bag of shot if you decide you do not want it inside anymore.

after talking to a few others i decided on my fix

first i started off my adding small amounts of lead shot to the stock with it leaning upside down, every time i added weight i stuffed a piece of cloth (a pair of clean boxers worked well for me it was a perfect fit just a little ahrd to get it but kep the shot from moving then i put the recoil pad back on to see how it shouldered and how it balanced

when i got the shot right i taped over the screw holes and around the out side of the stock and filled it with spray foam (great stuff was the brand available at all hardware stores and wallmart) im letting the foam harden now then im going to cut it flush with the stock and clean out the area around the screw holes

I keep an extra magazine and 20 rds ammo in the hollow butt of my Savage MKII rimfire boltgun, the ammo out of the magazine is wrapped in plastic. A little news paper keeps it from rattling.

I've lost a magazine , dropped out whithout noticing, won't be without one now.

I like the sand idea, if your worried about moisture, bake it in the oven first.... bone dry rock
