Thoughts please on putting extra weight into the cavity in the butt stock of my 18.5 inch 12 gauge Ithaca Model 37 riot gun.

I could use pennies or I could buy lead shot.

Would I expect to notice a decrease in perceived recoil?

What about the ability to bring the gun to bear on a target?

If it is a good idea why didn't riot guns come with weighted stocks?

Thank you in advance

Done it with 870s.

It may reduce felt recoil a bit. Hard to tell.

Adding weight at the butt moves the balance point back a bit. This makes the thing easier to swing. The down side is if it's easier to start swinging, it's also easier to stop.

If you do this, make sure the weight is secured in place with rags, etc. Otherwise, it mimics an impact hammer.

HTH....

Sorry, but Dave got it right. Shifting the balance more to the rear of the gun makes the barrel feel lighter, and it's easier to move- and to stop moving, too.

I thought it would be a plus if it was easier to stop but Dave said it would be a downside.

I am confused.

Am I correct that putting a little extra weight in the butt would make it a little easier to both start and stop on the swing?
