I would like to equip my .308 Win with a set of removable aperture iron sights. I would want something like the peep sight for the AI rifles, but I want an adjustable rear sight (I think the rear AI sight is not adjustable and can only be set for different distances from 100 to 600 meters, but I might be wrong) that could be used for shooting from 100 to at least 300m (500 m optimum) and mounted easily on the picatinny rail. The front sight should mount on the barell by means of the dovetail or a barrel band clamp (barrel contour is a heavy varmint as described by Shilen.

At first I thought of an M-14 front sight, but concluded that accomodating the muzzle for an AI muzzle brake with base for a front AI iron sight would be better choice. That way I could use the AI mirage band mounted to the fron sight. But what about the rear aperture???

Can anyone help me?
Is my front sight choice correct, or is there better one?
What can I do about the very probable differences in height between the setup of the sight on the AI rifle and my own?
Can the AI front sight be easily shortened/elongated if needed?

Will be very gratefull for any help or advice!

With a picatinny mount, you can use a standard side mount rear sight with an adapter, or a top mount rear sight.

As far as a front sight, you typically need to have the muzzle end turned down for the diameter of your front sight base. But if you give them a specific diameter, the company or a gunsmith can alter the base to fit your barrel. For examples of a front sight base check out:

Competition Shooting Stuff is owned and run by Gary Eliseo in California. He makes a lot of product for Creedmoor Sports, such as their Big Blue scope stand and their AR-15 match rifle buttstock. He also makes the R5 kit for Remington 700s to turn them into tube guns, which is what I'm working on putting together.

Thank You, guys! That is the kind of advice I was expecting!

The Williams Receiver Sights 5D Series seems right for me, as I want to avoid very big and costly precise target sights. Problem with the front one is that I want a pretty sturdy setup with protecive "wings" or hood if possible. So the Tubb front sight baseand the like are definitely not for me. I would rather stay with some basic and cheaper sight (that could be used with chosen rear Williams sight) and have it's base shortened or elongated and rewelded by a professional gunsmith. Bad idea? Hope not :) !!!

You will be sorely disappointed trying to use a Williams 5D on a target rifle.
Catalog description says: "...without micrometer adjustments. Windage and elevation adjustments easily made by loosening screws, moving sight and re-tightening screws.
That is ok for a hunting rifle that you will set and leave alone but is unacceptable for a target rifle to be shot carefully at more than one known range.

What kind of rifle do you have?

My 141 has the FP sight, with the firesight front. Very fine adjustment, and the fiberoptic bead front is vivid even in fairly low light. The FP requires drilling and tapping, but the end result is worth it.

I'm a non US resident so there is something special to it :)

The thing is I'm going to have a custom rifle completed by a professional gunsmith. It will be a tactical rifle on a Surgeon action. Problem is I have to get a Police permit on it, and I'm getting a sports permit (target shooting only, hunting forbidden). Problem is that the rifle will be equipped with a McMillan fiberglass camo stock (A5 woodland with fully adj. stock), and will LOOK like a sniper weapon. I want to show it in a target rifle setup - hence the need for the iron sight. And since I'm getting a target sight I want a really nice and useful one, and sturdy at that - so it could use it as a emergency sight and for a target shooting on a short ranges, when a scope would take all the fun aut of it. That New Englan sights are even better that all I've seen! Smaller and more sturdy.
