Saw one of these at Turner's this evening (priced at $60). Just wondering whether it's a good deal, or whether I can get a similar or better deal by buying individual items (with more discretion).

Sportsman's Guide has it for $37.97, and since I'm already planning to order some ammo and .45 mags... http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=86107

Thoughts? And while I'm at it, what sort of optics would you recommend? TIA

I never bothered with those, since the receiver cover mount is sort of flaky anyways, and all the operating instructions are online, I just ordered some stripped clips (I think I got them for $5 for 20 or something) and my first SKS has been happy.

I think that mount would be good for some kinda low magnification sight or red dot, but a better place would be forward of the bolt.

I shot a friend's scoped SKS, and the scope is way to far back. After getting whacked in the glasses twice, I went to using the iron sites with see thru mounts he had installed. That was fine for 10 or so rounds then I got whacked in the forehead and gave up. The scope made an incredibly fun shooter a PITA. Also, I don't think the SKS is accurate enough to really justify scoping anyway. YMMV.

Most of the scopes are short and mounted to the rear so they will be clear of the ejected cases. The SKS ejects vertically. You can cure that by installing a case deflector ($5 from CDNN, but wire it onto the rear sight leaf), in which case you can also mount a long scope. The SKS isn't accurate enough to warrant an expensive scope, but I have fun ringing the 360-yd gong every shot with mine.:D

Here's an sks scope that won't wack in the face, doesn't get dinged up by ejecting brass and allows you to use stripper clips. I have one like this and it still works after 10 years. Mark
