Hi. I’ve been lurking for a while and love this forum. You all know your shi… (stuff). Hope to get some advice. I’m (very) mechanically inclined. My Charter Arms 38 Undercover has a hammer problem. It will usually cock and hold in DA but a puff of air will cause it to fall. Dangerous to say the least. I get no misfires and the trigger pull (lbs.) feels good. It is fun to shoot and very accurate. I would like it to be my DC. What do you think the problem is and is this a fix I should attempt myself? :banghead:
Thanks,
Von Ryan

Ok, I am assuming you meant to say "cock and hold in SA" maybe? If it will not hold at full cock then it sounds like you have a problem with the sear/hammer engagement. This is a job for a gunsmith or the factory unless you fully understand how it works and have the correct stones and jigs. Either the sear angle or the hammer hook full cock notch is damaged or out of spec. If it was me I would send it to the factory although I have heard stories of long wait times. Write or call Charter and see what they say. Or you could have it converted (easily) to double action only which is how I carry my Charter.

Drail, Oops! Meant cock and hold in ‘SA’. I haven’t thought of the DAO conversion. That might be the way to go, seeing how I don’t think I’d ever use SA in defense. That only happens in the movies when they want the BG to sweat before being dispatched.
Good advice, thanks. I like easy remedies.

If your revolver is new, I'd send it back to the factory. If it's an olde revolver, I'd try a thorough cleaning (remove hammer, blast interior and hammer with brake cleaner, scrub with brush, re-lube) and try again. I've had several instances over the years of accumulated, dried lube & gunk causing such problems.

I sent an old C/A undercover back to them to be repaired. Good turn around time and great work. IIRC 75 bucks in total.
