I recently purchased a Windham Weaponry WW-15 (AR-15 wflat top with 16" barrel and picatinny gas block).

I am trying to figure out a combination that would be good for defense and double as a starter deer rifle with my 8-year old son.

I have already installed Troy dark earth BUIS (dioptic), and looking where to go from here. Thought about a Nikon P-223 (either 3x or 3-9x) with a Burris FastFire mounted on the top of the scope? Also like the EOtech's that can perhaps do both, but offer little magnificaction for deer hunting. Ideas?

My buddy has the vortex viper pst 1-4 power on his ar15. I just got the 4-16 power for my ar10. I havent shot with my optic yet, but the glass is awesome. I would recommend anything from vortex. If you get the burris p.e.p.r mounts, it allows you to mount the optic further forward to allow for proper eye relief and leaves the charging handle unobstructed.

I've got a 4x ACOG (TA-01NSN) on my SCAR and an Aimpoint PRO on my AR. Love them both. The ACOG would probably be better for hunting, unless you're anticipating short range shots (100yds or less). Also, with the ACOG in extreme close range defensive type shooting all you have to do is keep both eyes open and as long as the sight picture is filled with what you want to shoot, just start squeezing the trigger.

Forgot to mention the ACOG also has iron sights on the top of it that are serviceably accurate out to 50 yards. I haven't bothered to shoot them past 50.

Leupold 4.5-15 VX3 on top of this one, they run about $650 and you will be able to see those itty bitty bulet holes at 100 yards.

ACOG on this one super nice but for longer range I prefer the scope above.

many people believe in having iron sights as well as some kind of a scope on their AR's that can co-witness. If you aren't planning on shooting it like its a full auto Magpul maks some nice affordable sights for the AR.
Iron sights are good for close quarters situations, and if you get any kind of a scope (red dot, opticle, etc) for deer hunting, if you get some quality quick detachable mounts for the scope, (La Rue, etc) then you can have both worlds without going broke.
