Advice needed, looking for a new 'summer carry'

Well, that was really disappointing. I just got back from a gun store in town that had a PPS. Loved everything about it -- except that the trigger pull felt like it was about 9 or 10 lbs.! It was ridiculously stiff. No one in the store knew anything about a kit to lighten it up, and they didn't know of a gunsmith they'd recommend locally who might be able to work on it. I would have bought the gun if it had a 5 lb. trigger.

I'll write Walther (Smith & Wesson?). Maybe if they get enough complaints they'll come out with one with a lighter trigger, or at least a factory trigger kit to lighten it.

I haven't had my PPS to the range yet, but in dry-firing it feels comparable to my Glock triggers. A lot of the grittiness is supposed to clear up with some use. They also come bone dry, so I suspect a little lubrication will also lighten things up. It will never be a 1911 trigger, but I don't want a DAO trigger that light anyway.

It's possible that this particular one was just very stiff coming from the factory, perhaps that's why its the "only one they had left".

There is sometimes variation between one gun and the next off of the assembly line. I guess I'll wait until they sell this one and get in more, and then I'll try again.

Bummer.

According to the spec sheet at WaltherAmerica, it shouldn't be like that:

Trigger Pull: 6.1 lbs.

That is lighter than the LEM on the H&K .45 USP Compact, at least according to Wikipedia:

This mechanism improves the double action trigger performance and reduces the weight of the DAO trigger pull to 7.5-8.5 pounds

I'm so farblondzhet.

It's good that you had the opportunity (and good sense) to dry fire before buying, rather than just buying blind on line on some maniak's recommendation.

Like Mbr, I found mine to feel dry as a bone when I first brought it home. (Though dis-assembling on a white bed spread did establish that there was, indeed, a fair amount of (very dark) lubricant on the inside. (Note to self: do not dis-assemble firearms on white bed spreads.)) And lubricating the weapon (as recommended in another forum) before going to the range removed that "gritty" feel in the trigger pull (and the slide action, for that matter).

Has anyone had any experience with the micro 9mms? I mean the truly small ones, basically .380-sized.

The guns that come to mind are the Rohrbaugh, the old Colt Pocket Nine, and the forthcoming Boberg.

I'm in the market for a Kel Tec PF9. http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/pf9.htm

I've heard good things about them. The kinks have gotten worked out from the early models, and they are relatively slim light. Mag capacity is a little low, but for a 9mm that's not much larger than it's little brothter, the P3AT, I'll work with it. The PF9 is pocketable. Its' big brother, the P11, is IMHO just a little too big, but it is still thinner than a Glock, XD, M&P, et. al.

And, price point is <$300, beating all those considerably.

Is it a Kahr, Seecamp, or XD? Nope. But it a) shoots; b) shoots well; and c) has a lifetime warranty & excellent customer service should it fail to do either.

If you're looking for "pocket carry" in the summer, I can't recommend the Seecamp enough. I carry the LWS32 while I'm waiting for my LWS380 to be built. Great little guns!

Sorry to bring up an old post but I would like to mention the Radom P64 as a great summertime carry gun. I carry mine with handloaded Hornady or with CorBon Pow'rball 9x18. This gun is thin and easy to conceal. They are also very inexpensive right now.

I know a PPS or Kahr PM would be great as well but keep in mind, these police/military surplus guns are only $149 and most of the people that are getting there's at J&G right now are getting guns that appear to be unfired/unissued.

Frank I like em but the one I almost bought had an atrocious double action trigger pull. I mean down right despicable. Many people were recommending a replacement spring. Did you go that way?

Matheath,

The stock DA is very hard in these guns. I bought the 3-spring pack from Wolff Springs. I ended up going with the 19lb hammer spring. With this spring installed the P64 feels like a DA revolver. The SA is crisp and extremely light. Wolff also has recoil springs available in different weights.

My year round carry:

With jeans: 1911 commander
With shorts: 1911 officer
(both are Kimber Coverts with CT grips)
These are usually backed up with a new york reload in one of several flavors: 642, PF9, P3AT
