Im in the process of starting to stock up on ammo for SHTF,shortages,emergencies,etc... and Im wanting some opinions on brands and types of ammo would work best. The calibers are 7.62X39, 223, 9mm, 45ACP, and 22LR . On the 7.62X39 Ill just go with Wolf probably FMJ, the 223 I think Wolf would work, and the 22LR Ill get whatever. My main questioning is on the 9mm and .45ACP. Should I just get Wolf for these as well? Or WWB? Or should I get something more "advanced" Again this is to be for SHTF/Emergency. Any opinions are welcome! Thanks!

For SHTF use, I stock up on the cheapest stuff that cycles reliably in the weapons that will eat it. My advice is to buy a few various boxes of the cheap fodder and see what your animal's diet prefers.

Wolf runs fine

in my AK and my Para Ord .45.
Just got some 7.62 from Sportsmansguide, maybe the famine is over.

I had/have poor luck on Wolf .223. I use thier 7.62x39 exlusively and it runs through every AK and SKS I have ever used, but the .223 has been the worst.

I have tried it in ARs, NEF varminters, Savage 10s, and lastly, my wife's Ruger M77. They shoot ok but the cases tend to stick in chambers if the guns heat up. I know what causes it, and how to fix it, the laquer coats the chambers and gets sticky when warm. The fix is to clean the chambers with a good solvent, but cases start to stick after 50 rounds or so. Tends to get tedious during a long range session and would be down right disasterous in a SHTF situation.

I use the Brit ss109 ammo now and it runs flawlless!

Surplus 9mm???

I don't think Wolf or WWB really qualify as "surplus" ammo. I just bought some surplus 9mm from Wideners.

sur·plus Audio pronunciation of "SURPLUS" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sûrpls, -pls)
adj.

Being more than or in excess of what is needed or required

In 9mm & .45acp, I see no advantage in seeking out exotic surplus ammo instead of buying WWB at WalMart for about $10.00/100 & $20.00/100 respectfully. See if your pistols like them, then stock up! :)

As for .223 I have had great results with Win Isreali Q3131, Lake City Federal, and S&B green tip all bought from Natchez.

As for .308, the last bulk order I placed was, I think, South African mil-surp from AIM surplus. This stock also performed well.

Also, consider ordering Black Hills remanufactured ammo from Midway USA. They run for about $11.50 per 50 rounds. This is very close to Walmarts $4/20rnd Win Whitebox cost. This isn't bad for match grade ammo.

Then what do you suggest?

Q3131 or Q3131A is good stuff. Anything from Black Hills. XM193 if you can find it (avoid the XM193PD stuff like the plague). Federal AE223 might be a good pick too, though i am not aware of its terminal performance.

If you want good yet inexpensive 9mm, try the 100 round value packs of Remington 115gr JHP at WalMart - it runs about $15 down here. You can grab 100 rounds every payday, and watch it stack up quick, and that is a good JHP that steps out at 1150 FPS, (I chrono'ed some), not shabby at all.
