Advice on painting front sight

I lost track of this thread and reading through it again I would have been ahead of the game if I had followed some of your suggestions.

I used an acrylic paint using a very small brush. Three coats looked real good. Dryed overnight. Peeled off first time in holster.

Found a product called Bright-Sight espically for gun sites. They provided cleaner and 5 different colors. Paint seemed to ‘stick’ better and they recommended at least 24 hours to dry, “the longer the better”. Paint was brighter and again the finish product looked really good. Peeled off after almost 3 days to dry.

Back to the acrylic. Thinned with water. Really weak looking. Many, many coats. I lost track, applied with tooth pick. Looks good, in and out of holster many times with only a little peeling, more like very small chips along the edge. Looks really good.

Lessons learned. Thin paint. The Bright-Sight paint was difficult (impossible) to thin but I think there cleaner made the difference in paint sticking. This will be something that has to be touched up from time to time.

I spent some time trying to figure out the best color and once it is on, I can’t tell what color it is when aiming, but I do get contrast so it helps aiming, which was the point to begin with. Toothpick or small wood stick of some sort is by far the best way to go. Apply VERY small amount and let it fill in the steps of ramp. Just a very small amount on end of toothpick does the job. And a lot of coats.

The idea to hang upside down to dry is a dandy, wish I had thought of that.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I will not be going into the gun site painting business anytime soon.

I used model airplane paint, because that's what I had. Painted both my 642 and my model 13's ramps orange. I painted the serrations only, using a small brush. Several years and tons of holster presentations later the paint is still on there, intact.

You don't need no high dollar "gun paint" or any such overpriced crap. Finger nail polish or Testors model airplane paint is cheap, available everywhere and works.
