I once bought a Marlin M1 22 with a hideous carving of some religious scene complete with crosses, trees, sun, and waves in the background. It took a lot of sanding but I got the whole thing out being careful to sand on both sides of the stock to keep it symetrical as possible. The stock probably ended up 1/4 narrower overall but if you didn't know you would never notice it. It took a lot of time but I got the gun cheap because of the "artwork". Something more common I'd probably just find another stock for.
