Removing a Tung oil finish from a new stock

Several months ago I received some new Enfield stocks for my 2A1. The wood is a pretty blond color, but I want to stain the wood a darker color. It appears to be a Tung oil finish applied over the wood.

Is there a method to remove this finish without doing a lot of sanding?

Rub it down with acetone and 4/0 steel wool or and extremely fine scotch pad. you may have to repeat the process several times, depending on how deep the ol finish is. Doing this will make the stock look a little white, so then rub it down with mineral spirits and a rag to get any residue off.

After that, you're free to finish however you would like. If you're going for a military look, you might want to try the Chestnut Ridge stain (available from Brownells) and then hand rub Tung or BLO over the top of that for a good seal.

Thanks for the response. That was similar to what I was thinking, but wasn't sure which solvent would cut tung oil...
