so I need some advise as I am reloading for my DPMS Lr 308 with a 16" barrel. today i loaded up 20 rounds of 168 A Max over 38.7 grains of IMR 4895 per Hornady 9th edition .308 service rifle section. The load was just middle of the road and I did not expect much, it yielded 2100 FPS and 1.5 inches at 200 yds. I have 3 questions. first, my next load will be with Remington brass and 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip and 42.2 grains of IMR 4895 does any one have any experience or feed back with this load? second question, I have about 1000 pieces of military brass mostly Lake city and I am thinking of starting out with 38 grains of 4895. I came up with 38 grains by subtracting 10% from Hornady's first load below max in the 9th edition. Any thoughts on 38 grains of IMR 4895, Lake city brass, and 150 grain ballistic tips? Last question how can i tell if i have successfully removed the crimp on the primers?:banghead:I am decaping then using the RCBS swager. the problem is I can't see the crimp before or after using the swaging die :fire: and i have primed a couple cartridges and it seats fine. Thoughts??
Thanks for the help and feedback.

I found AMax the best in the same rifle. It likes the H4895 for everything including cast. I use mixed brass and CCI LR primers, no problem. If the primer seats below flush and doesn't crush, go to go. I don't have a swager, the LC brass is a PITA, just use a drill bit. I don't see any reason to go below the min posted load, leaves sooty necks and may not lock back on empty mag. I put an adjustable GP on mine to compensate for varied loads. It is accurate, as you've found.

I load 145-150 grain SPBT with 42grains H4895 in LC brass which is supposed duplicate m80 ball ammo. But you should start 2 grains lower -5% and work up. Not sure in your LR308 though.

Good luck and be careful,

Somewhere between 42.0 and 43.0gr of IMR4895 is where you want to be with a 150gr bullet in Lake City brass. 41.5gr of IMR4895 with a 168gr bullet in Lake City brass is a time tested load. If you have successfully removed the crimp, you will be able to seat a new primer; if you have not, you will not be able to seat a new primer.

Thank you all for the great info. I am working on some loads now and will hopefully be able to report results tomorrow. Thanks again.
