After about a 1000 rounds of not cleaning my Taurus 608 using Lee tumble lube 158 grain cast bullts and White Lable Alox, it finally locked up. Cylinder would not turn. Outside of clyinder looked brown after cleaned off black burned powder. Used brake cleaner.

Was curious to see what would happen if did not clean. Now i know.

Brake cleaner from parts store sure cheaper than same stuff with "GUN" on label. Same stuff used to make both.

You should call the Guinness World Record and get that in the Book:what:

With that soft lube and number of shots without cleaning I bet that Taurus looked like one of my wifes CANDELABRAS:neener:

tackstrp- As a retired chemistry teacher...

I am pleased to see you use the Brake cleaner as it along with many other products will " cut the crud " and will do it much cheaper than said "GUN" cleaners. However, do not use it on wood stocks. Many years ago I wrote an article in a blackpowder magazine on house hold products that would clean up the residue left from the shooting of black powder, and do it cheaper and faster than the expensive margeting products . At the national matches in Friendship some of the old timers still use them.

dang i did not take pictures. dont think i will do that dumb stunt again. what a pain to take apart clean and get it back together. when i go to the dentist the hygentist uses a ultrasonic thing bath to clean my bridge. No idea what one looks like but i suspect just about any vibrator would do the trick if attached to bucket of solvent. . Or if had a shell case vibrator cleaner that might do the trick.

How many rounds total have you shot with your 608? Is the lock up and timing still ok? I'm thinking about picking up a used 608 and was wondering how it will hold up to a lot of rounds.

What did the insides of the action look like? I'm guessing that most of the problem would have been the cylinder getting jammed from the buildup on the front face and from buildup and oil forming a tarry like grunge in the cylinder center axle so the thing wouldn't spin easily anymore.

Oh, and for an effective and cheap cleaner look up the recipe for Ed's Red. It's even cheaper than brake cleaner and has the advantage of leaving a light film of protective oil.

Tackstrp- I recently bought a new Taurus 608 and could not get past 16 rounds of 38 +p the first time I shot it. Locked up solid- had to release the cylinder-tried again- still locked up. Took it home, cleaned it, was able to cycle the cylinder- so took it back to the range a week later and same story. Taurus has given me a call tag for the weapon and it is on the way to Miami. Two things I noted in the letter to Taurus with the description of the problem:1. The hammer has a slight lateral wiggle -I cannot find this in any of my other revolvers. 2. The cylinder rod does not appear to be true when you spin it- feels as if there is an ever so slight bend in it.

Since you own the same weapon- would appreciate any thoughts- I like how it shoots when it worked.

I have shot my 608 four times. Bought it new in June. The first two sessions when I was shooting it DA, I would have an occasional rough trigger pull, and once the trigger wouldn't pull. I would jiggle the cylinder and it shot fine.

The third time out I had lots of the same problem. I was on the verge of taking it back, but took it to the range today and there was no problem.

When it works, I like the way it shoots. I get better shot groups with my 657 7.5" at 30' than I do with the 608 at 15'.
