You've never heard anything about Colt factory mags?

Sure, i've heard of Colt factory mags, and Metalforms and all that. Just never have heard of "Delta" Colt mags. Their pricey for something so plain jane. Don't get me wrong, if they work then I guess they're doing their job.

Wilson 47s, Checkmates, and Metalforms. All 7 rounders.

My only complaint with the wilsons is the baseplate will sometimes slide off while slamming a magazine home. I've been buying metalforms lately.

My 1911 is a .38 Super RIA, it's nickel plated but came with a blued magazine  I got some Mec-Gar 9rd nickel plated mags for it, they have not had any problems yet. It will be fun to see how much longevity they have.

No one recommended the Cobra mag; is there a reason?

Sigh!

Read post number 21.

All of it.

My only complaint with the wilsons is the baseplate will sometimes slide off while slamming a magazine home. I've been buying metalforms lately.

I haven’t had that experience. I compete with my Wilsons, and haven’t had nor seen a baseplate come off. At least not one assembled properly.

The Metalforms that came with my Springer Professional work fine, but otherwise I would stick with CMC powermags and Wilson 47D’s.

It’s America, pick what ever works for you.

Go figure.

They look so plain jane too! I've never heard anything about those
I don't buy magazines based on looks; I buy 'em to feed ammo into my pistol. ;)

The Colt hybrid magazines work splendidly. I know of nobody who's bought into them who has not experienced rock-solid reliability with them.

Impact Guns sells them for just a tick over $20/each.

Chieftain, I apologize, in thew future I will make sure to carefully read each word of your expert opinions. Sigh, I know how hard it must be for you to make a point without being dramatic.

I used Wilson #47D mags in my SW1911, and I use Wilson Elite Tactical Mags (ETMs) in my Springer Loaded 1911 9mm. Top quality products and I've never had a problem with any of them - skeeter_08

No one recommended the Cobra mag; is there a reason?

I mentioned it and recommended it in post #16. They work great in my opinion, and are well made and thoughtfully designed. Tripp also has a lot of detailed information on his web page about magazine function and design that is educational. He explains exactly how and why his magazines are built the way they are, and he invites you to call and chat about it. His mags provide much better controlled feed than Wilsons. Plus you can call him on the phone and ask about that in person. I've had a tough time getting Bill Wilson on the line to explain his design, so that adds value to me, too.

Their "conversion kits" are also great, as I recommended. Great follower - which is I think their great strength. The follower is:

1) dimpled, for last round retention
2) grooved, for the same purpose
3) skirted, to:
a) protect aluminum ramps
b) prevent the follower "bobbling" fore or aft on the last round and allowing cartridge drop as the round is moving forward, creating low ramp strikes. After my own testing, I have found this the cause of many last-round ftf issues, but never see it addressed very widely. Much stiffer springs can usually fix it, but a skirted follower completely eliminates it as an option, weak spring or no.
4) steel insert in the polymer for positive slide-stop activation

These are the most evolved and intelligently designed followers I've ever seen, and no one makes anything with all of these features. Plus, for $8, you get a nice mag spring, so this is a great deal if you have quality bodies and just need to upgrade to the follower/spring.

I think Cobra mags are the best things on the market - I like factory Colt, and that is usually my first choice, but Tripp is slowly winning me over to them. The reason Tripp mags aren't regarded more highly is:

1) They don't have the marketing muscle and size of Wilson
2) They only sell direct to gut end-user costs, so you don't see them in catalogs online all the time.

So do not overlook Tripp, they are well worth it, especially if you are having last-round-hold open problems, have an alloy frame, or also having a drop-free failure with other quality mags. Their followers can really help with these issues where not all others can.

Colt, Checkmate, Mec-Gar, Metalform and Chip McCormick.

I prefer the Metalform, they are readily available and I've never gotten a bad one. Colt is a little spendy for the name brand. Mec-Gar works fine in all my pistols, some of the eight round ones don't like JHP but all have fed hardball well. McCormick is a little finnicky, they work fine in three of my pistols, one of my carry guns won't feed JHP with them.

Several of the well kown brands I didn't mention may be great, but I've never used them so I won't comment.

Not sure who they have become or if they are even still in business, but the USA brand, which had a TERRIBLE reputation for almost everything they made, actually made a very good 1911 magazine. Wish I had bought more! The version I have in .45 has a metal removable base (no pad) for more complete cleaning. They have all functioned 100% in each of the 1911's I have used them in. Just in case you find some, somewhere at a good price, BUY THEM.
