I need some input on buyin after market clips for my 1911's . Colt Series 70,Springer GI-.45 and AO Standard. Tell me pros and cons of the experiences you've had . Thanx, Jim

If your looking for spare magazines, you may want to look into factory mags. I had good luck with Springfield mags in my Springfield 1911.

If you like to spend money, you may want to look into Wilson Combat, or Chip McCormick magazines. :)

Chip McCormick-best value Wilson Combat-for the rich guys Factory mags are 50/50 good/not so good and most of them are designed for Ball rounds and may not feed some bullet styles. If you're only planning on shooting Ball Springfields mags are all you need.

While this is a little unusual, I suggest Chip McCormick "Shooting Star" magazines, with Pachmyer followers.

This creates a dead-reliable 7rd magazine with consistent dimensions that drops free in all of my 1911's.

As an option, you can put a 1/4" Pachmyer pad on the baseplate for more positive magazine insertion if you use them for IDPA. These are so small I just use the same magazines for CCW.

Colt magazines are the best.

One of the best spare magazines I have is a 7 round military surplus mag. I've read that Check Mate was/is a major contractor for military magazines and you can order magazines directly from them.

I also have several Chip McCormick magazines, both the shooting stars and power mags in both blue and stainless and they're very good magazines.

If you want QUALITY get the Wilson Combat Mags. They are IMO the best out there, But they are also some of the highest out there. I would also have to put the Chip McCormick mags at top of the list, but under Wilson.

If you want QUANITY checkout Sports Mans Guide. They have new "Mil-Spec" mags for $8.00 (I think) They won't perform as good as a Wilson but you can get 4 for the price of 1. And most of the time if you have a decent 1911 they run fine.

Magazines..... and I prefer Chip McCormick shooting star mags I use the ones with a plastic pad because i have an extended mag well but you may want the flush fits. I have had less problems out my chips than with my wilson combat mags.

As long as they run as intended from a well known manufacturer, they're good. I run Wilson 47Ds, Wilson ETMs, Tripp Cobramags, CMC Powermags, Baer mags, ACT mags, Colt's factory mags, they all run.

My 8 rounders get dropped in dirt, and they still go. I do like the plastic followers in the ETMs and 47Ds however, it makes it less sticky with the grit. However, even when gritty prior to cleaning it still feeds fine.

My rules are this:

1) Colt factory, checkmate or metalform mags (they make most of the Colt factory ones, that's what the "C" and "M" mean on the bottom). Other vendors use these OEM makers, too, like SA, so there are others that work, too. I like Tripp mags a lot. I had good success with Les Baer mags, too.
2) 7rd, not 8. More reliable.
3) Any mag that has a problem, get's a Tripp conversions kit with their new spring and the skirted polymer follower with the steel insert for positive slide-stop activation.

I have had poor success with CMC shooting stars and Mec-Gar mags (I believe meg-car is oem for Kimber). Under no circumstances buy a "GI" style mag knock-off. These are the ones that abound at discounters, Gunbroker, and gun shows. Just worthless. I do not use Wilsons as I detest their base pads and they do not offer a true flat-bottom mag, and they are overpriced. But they do work well when I had some.

Like many have said,

Colt factory (may or may not be marked "Colt"), or Wilson.

I LOVE the several Wilson "Bureaucrat" 10-rounders I've got.

I've also never had a problem with the factory Para-Ord mags for my double-stackers, but apart from what I've mentioned here, I've had at least one jam with everything else I've tried.

Having a couple of useless mags sitting around will negate any savings you thought you were getting by choosing them in the first place.

I learned the hard way: get the good ones.

I have about 16 Wilson Combat model 47D 8 rounders, about 5 Wilson combat 7 rounders.

Also

I like for much of my shooting with the 1911, is the CMC Power mags, I have about 15 of the 8 rounders and 12 of the 10 rounders.

I have found the CMC power mags, and The Wilson Combat mags to be pretty much bullet proof and stone reliable in all 12 of my 1911's.

Many folks are now using Cobra Mags from Tripp. I have tried them without to much success, in my guns. Some folks sure like'em though.

Good luck.

Fred

Add another for the Wilson 47D club. Not a rich guy ($10 bucks more makes me rich?) but they have consistently worked for me whereas the CMC mag compressible follower never seemed to quite meet the mark.

wow! Those mags are expensive rbernie. They look so plain jane too! I've never heard anything about those.

BTW, I read that magazine testing article you posted too, and it was definitly enlightening.

You've never heard anything about Colt factory mags?

Nighthawk sells the prettiest black ones.
